Is anyone on Disability for anxiety/depression or anything else..can you advise on how it works?

Hi, I have been been thinking of filing for disability as I have been unable to work due to bad anxiety.  I want to work, but just can't seem to.  I have all my hospital records of when I was hospitalized last September, and I have been seeing a Psychiatrist for Depression/anxiety and panic since then and have all my records (paperwork) from the visits.  Can someone who is on disability please advise on how it works?  Does it (disability) get taken out of Social Security that we get when we retire?  Do they take out Social security, Federal, State, local taxes out of the checks?  Sorry to sound a bit naive on this subject, but I have never done this before.  I have suffered with anxiety and depression for about twenty-five years and have always managed to work..but lately, I am starting to wonder, as I have been unable to work..everytime I start a new job..and am in training, my anxiety gets so bad, that I have to leave and I have a panic attack.  I am not even sure if I would get accepted, but it is worth a shot, but I don't really understand the process. Thanks for any help.

Unfornately i am on disabilty for manic depression and panic disorder very bad anxiety attacks took me about 4 times to apply but recieved it in 2003 but like you i would rather work if i can cause its not much money at all i get about 640 dollars a month but i also have 2 children that live with me i am a 27 year old male under my girlfriends name but they will look at your records i had records since i was 13 or 14 and tons of em been to the emergency room tons of times i get embarassed all the docs know me up there but i'd love to work if i can but probably never will be able to but i hope that can change but i just feel like i'm getting worser and worser but i believe i will go back on lexapro i taken it for a week but am scred of pills the only pill im on now is 1 and a half mg of xanax twice a day that pill gives me no side effects and calms me down but my energy level has been crippling and the lexapro really gave me energy but was very hard to get any sleep at all on that good luck with your disability

Hi Carlirae,

Thanks for getting back to me. I had to get a really easy job..due to anxiety/panic attacks. I couldn't even make it through the training period without falling apart. I think I am getting a little better..I have been on Klonopin which has been a Godsend. Unfortunately, with this easy job..comes very low pay...only $9.25 an hour ($1066 a month, net pay..so I am struggling). But the training period was only a few days as opposed to weeks of training. All I do is make outgoing calls all day (between 500-700 calls a day) leave messages on answering machines, and if I do get someone, I transfer them to a bill collector. Very easy work..no stress..but very low pay. I am just thrilled that I am able to work though. I hope you are feeling better soon. Do you think it might the medication? I think there is specific medication for Bi-polar like Lamictal and Abilify. I have heard these are pretty good meds for Bi-polar/Manic depression.
