Lost a very good friend...my dog.

i lost my dog a few months ago and i stil cant get over it. Ive got a new dog now but its never the same..i dont know what to do....i really miss him alot...what hurts the most is that i wasnt there when he died. I just wanted to say bye....

*hugs* I know its hard to lose a dog in my life I have lost 2. They become like a member of the family. Try to not think so much about them being gone but the fun times you u had together.

I'm really sorry Jez,

I've only recently got my puppy a Newfoundland. He's huge, he bumps over my kids and sneaks into the food when I'm not looking. He barks if I put him in the yard without me. He keeps his crate clean but considers the rest of my house as 'outside'. He eats dead fish and doesn't always come when he's called. He dirtys my clothes, just by walking by. He's a bugger, and I'll be devastated when he goes. Another dog won't replace this pain in the a**. Nothing could. I'm really sorry Jez.

Hi Jez,

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. It's so awful losing a pet because they become part of the family. It was awful when my dog and cat died. Ive since got 2 new cats and they are wonderful.
I hope you manage to move on from this - you will never forget your dog but you can feel pleased that you are giving another dog a home.

I too am missing a beloved cat, he died 2 years ago. I replaced him with two cats and neither of them comes close to how loving he was. But I now love both of the new cats, even if one of them is a trouble maker. It's sad that we go thru so many pets in our lifetime but I think it would be a much less plesant world without them.

I am so, so sorry!  Having survived four cats, I really know how you feel.  One was with us for 18 years - same time most children stay at home, the others 11, 12 and 14 yrs.  Grief can be overwhelming, but you will come out the other side eventually.

We have a new kitty - he found us! last January.  Just walked in the patio door one day with his tail high and his nose twitching, and he has been here ever since.  A gift from the Almighty.  When hubby took him to have him neutered, vet said he was about a year old.  Despite his unique personality, some of his antics remind us of the others, and we tell him how he is like one of his "brothers."

I'm glad you have a new canine friend.  Love him 'real hard' ... he'll listen when you tell him about his older predecessor.  Talking about your grief helps get you through.

I have 2 cockatiels and I dread the day when I lose them...I try not to dwell on it, but I know it's inevitable that they will die someday. But I decided that in the meantime, I'm going to give them the best life I can! You are doing the right thing by having gotten another dog. Pets, like children, can't be "replaced" by another, but love is something that ALL of them need! Hopefully the knowledge that you gave your sweet dog a good life will help, as well as knowing that you are now giving another dog a happy life...there are so many poor animals out there that have no one to love or care for them. Many are mistreated and even killed. We can't save them all, sad to say, but we cherish the fact that we are helping the ones we have! You might find it comforting to donate some dogfood to the local animal shelter sometimes. Our local shelter is finally a "no-kill" shelter and at Publix Grocery Store, they often take up donations for the shelter to help with the expense of caring for animals that are being kept alive until they can find them a home. This is just a thought. But no matter what, always remember that you have so much love to give and there are so many animals to love! :)

Hi jez,  I first wanted to welcome to the forum, we are happy to have you join our community here.  I can very much relate to the pain and loss that you are going through.  I had a little Shih-Tzu named Babycakes who was with me for almost 11 years.  She was as close to me as any child could be (I dont have kids), she was my best friend, and always there no matter what.  So to say that I loved her was not even coming close to expressing the amount of emotions that I carried for her.  She was always so happy and healthy, but she did end up getting sick and the vets who had hired a new doctor right out of school (I didnt know this at the time) treated her and missed a major problem.  She ended up getting a major infection and having to go back into the vets for several days and an operation..long story, but I got a call at 2am telling me that she had passed away.  It just about killed me. I cried so much over the next 5 days that my eyes were swollen shut and felt like there was sandpaper in them and even as I write this I can help but cry because I miss her so much.  BUt I was eventually able to get to a place where I could talk about her without being too upset and I made a plaque for her with her picture in it and her name ingraved. I now have a cat that I saved from where my mom stables her horse...he was starving, basically eating frogs and grasshoppers to stay alive.  You could never tell it now to look at the fat thing...lol!  And I know that one day I will get another Shih-Tzu as they are such good dogs...but that is why I didnt get another dog right after she died as I felt that I would be trying to replace her and I knew that I could never do that.  No other dog could ever replace her.

Atedogs:  I've seen that poem - makes me cry, too!  My cats have been creamated and the poem was included with the ashes for one of them.  If you have a copy, please post it.  We'll all have a good cleansing, rejoicing cry together.

The poem is called Rainbow Bridge, I think. A friend gave me a copy of it when my cat died. Makes me cry too. If I can find it I'll post it.
