gal,
there are a lot of charlatins out there, just as there are some excellent hypnotherapists. unfortunately, few, if any, municipalities regulate this form of therapy. i have known a few licensed therapists who occationally used hypnosis in their practice. however, i would not use a piece of paper (degree, license, etc) be my sole criteria in selecting a hypnotherapist. remember that even freud, who more-or-less pioneered this specialty, gave up using hypnosis as a theraputic tool fairly early in his reserch.
i have also known unlicensed practicioners who were very good - and more who were as close to quacks as i would ever want to associate.
about 20 yrs ago my wife and i went to a non-licensed hypnotherapist to help us give up smoking. he man was very capable, well educated, and well trained. after a single session, my wife was able to do without a cigarette for about two weeks. i lasted about two weeks and two days. i had four VERAY large contracts that fell through at the same time. if you lost over a million dollars, i expect the stress would drive you back to cigs, too.
hope this helps. let us kniow how it goes, whatever you decide to do.
