I am a regular member on the Crohn's forum after being diagnosised earlier this year. Just getting that diagnosis has increased my depression. I have been on Prozac for years along with Buspar for anxiety. I have gone from 20mg of Prozac to 60mg and the depression seems to be getting worse. I am considering asking my doctor to change me to something completely different. I was wondering if anyone has tried or is using Cymbalta? I have pain related to the Crohn's at times and stress causes the Crohn's to flare up and have been wondering if maybe the Cymbalta might be more helpful with some of these things? Any information one way or the other would be helpful and appreciated.

Hi Charlotte and Welcome to Depression!

I have not had any personal experience with Cymbalta but I know of people on here who have taken Cymblata and they think its great. (But as with any med, there are also people who it has not worked for). It sounds like discussing a different med with your doctor is a good idea if the increased prozac is not working.

Hey there Charlotte,

I am on Cymbalta, was up as high as 120mg but now down to 60 mg per day and I am having good results with it.  I would really like to get down to 30 mgs.  I have been on Lexapro, and many of the others but this works for me.  Of course none of the drugs are perfect.

It did take a good 6 weeks for it to kickin for me where I leveled out.

From one Nana to another...lol....as I am called by my grand children. I too take Cymbalta and it was a lifesaver for me. I was in a crisis episode after being on Prozac for many years it must have just stop working. When my brother told me he had lung cancer, I freaked. Our Mom died in 1994 with it. Anyway I cried for days and finally my daughter got me in to see a Psych Dr that specialized in Pharmacology. He was awesome and knew his stuff. He put me on Cymbalta, WellbutrinXL and Trazadone at night. Within a week my mood lifted and knew I was on my road to recovery again. I always know that I will get better sooner or later. I keep that a positive in my mind. Right now Cymbalta is working so good for me, well I guess it's the whole concoction working. I do wish for you the very best on any medications that you may have changed. All I ever say is "Keep the Faith"!!!!

Thank's for the replies. I have not felt this depressed in 15 years. I'm sure it is partially the crohns and then I have this other thing going on with my nursing license and changing states. Fingerprints showed an arrest in 1972 for class C misdameanor and now I have to be reviewed by the board and all this other stuff and of course it's driving me crazy which causes the Crohns to flare and on and on it goes. I'm trying to decide do I keep taking the prozac until the cymbalta starts working? I for sure don't want to start feeling any worse than I already do.

Your Pdoc should tell you how to make the transition depending on the two medications.  It will take the Prozac time to clear your system and the Cymbalta time to kick in.

I am sure there is a smooth transition.  Hoping the best for you.
