Hi:)

I started januvia today and still take metformon 1000 twice a day and 28 units of Lantus at night. I woke up to a bs of 87 and took the januvia and other meds. My bs has not gone over 88 today(it was staying 80 to about 126 without januvia). Is this normal and do I need to watch for low bs? What bs should I have when I go to bed to avoid a low? Thanks:)

Congratulations! your numbers are in the very normal non-diabetic range as reported by Bernstein. Januvia won't cause you to go low- it only kicks in when too many carbs enter your system. It will help you to stay stable- level out the peaks and valleys.

My blood sugars run in the mid 80's to low 70's all day long. My AM numbers vary, depending on how long I sleep ( I have a strong Dawn Phenomenon) but can range from 78- 110. If you're running in the 70's consistently, you might want to ask your doctor about cutting back on the Lantus.

The januvia seems to be keeping my bs low when I take the prednisone. Is that possible? When I take the prednisone is usually when I go up to the 126 and that is skipping eating lunch every day. Now I can eat a low carb lunch and stay without the 126 spike. I tried and tried to get to where my bs wouldn't spike but the prednisone just wouldn't let me. What are the side effects to watch for with januvia? Hopefully, I will be weaned off prednisone soon and that will maybe get me off the lantus. Maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel:)

I think that whenever your sugar starts to rise past a certain point, the Januvia works to keep it stable- it doesn't matter whether it's because of Dawn Phenomenon, too many carbs, stress, or medication. That's how it's been working for me.

I've been running a cold all week and my fasting has not been above 107 - usually when I'm sick it goes up into the 120's-

I have had no side effects form Januvia- the package insert says flu -like symptoms, congestion and such, but I never got them. When I first started it, I felt very happy- almost as if I had been depressed and it lifted ( I wasn't) and I think I read somwhere that it may have an antidepressant type effect because it affects those receptors in the brain, but I don't have the links on this computer.

Overall, it's been a great drug for me. Keep me posted on how you're doing with it.

Sandy is right. When your sugar starts to rise the Januvia kicks in and lowers it - keeps it stable. I started it about 3 months ago. At the time I started by bs was 7.9. In December it was 6.9. This month I am at 6.4. My doctor says that if it gets below 6.0 I can discontinue the Actos. Also, since starting Januvia I've seen a decrease in hunger and have lost 16 pounds. I do have a little more sinus congestion on Januvia than I did before--but a Neti pot clears that up.

You do need to watch out for lows. I was taking Actos and Prandin when I first started. I wound up with some numbers in the 40's and 50's. Since then, my doctor has dicontinued the Prandin and I've only had 2 lows (both in the 50's). The happened when I had the flu and skipped a meal.

Like Sandy, it's been a great drug for me. Keep us posted on how you do with Januvia.

Sorry, meant to say A1c's were 7.9, 6.9, and 6.4. My doctor has been running them a lot more often than every 3 months to see how the Januvia is working for me.

My sinuses are more congested also. Where do you get a Neti Pot? Doctor said to use Ocean Spray?

I found my neti pot at Walgreens. It's called sinu cleanse and is basically a saline nasal wash.

Januvia? Is this over the counter or a script drug? I could use some help with BS lately. Any one that could shed some light for me?

Januvia is a prescription drug. It is a DPP-4 inhibitor. It's made by Merk- I think the website is www.januvia.com

I just started Januvia a week and a half ago. My BS was already in the 80's. so I will see what happens. Januvia is a newer drug. I just asked about it to see if I could get off Lantus and doctor said I could try it. Right now I am sick with some stomach virus and really having to work at keeping he BS down. How do you control Bs while sick? Mine is going up 50 points and just as quickly falling 60 points and making me dizzy and feeling awful. My fingers and tongue get numb too. These stomach cramps are killing me:)
