t1 -- managing diabetes while taking cortisone

I am a pump user and I am currently taking medrol -- a cortisone -- for a Uc flare. does anyone out there have experience to BS control while taking steriods? By the same token does any one out there have uc and type 1 diabetes?

I have type2 diabetes actually caused by prednisone which I am on for asthma. I have to be very careful to keep my blood glucose levels down. I keep the bg between 80 and 100 at all times but this limits greatly what I can eat. I eat very low carb. No wheat, fruits and I can't drink milk. Everyone is so different in what they can eat so I try a food and test at 1, 2, and 3 hours to see how it affect my bg. I also have to be very careful in the 3 to 4 hours after I take the steroid meds because that will raise my blood glucose quite a bit. Try to avoid all carbs in this time frame. If you are hungry, try a small salad and some chicken or turkey. By eating this way I have brought my Ac1 to 6.1 from 15.2 in three months. My bg was 878 when I was admitted to the hospital 3 months ago so I still feel shaky and sick in the 70 and 80's. Because my bg was so high and they figure I was running pretty high for a couple years, this should pass as I adjust to the lower bg. I sure hope so! Steroids are nasty but sometimes we have to be on them. Be very careful being type1 and check your blood often. You might need med adjustments and hopefully your doctor will work closely with you on this. Keep coming here, the administrators and posters are very nice and have a wealth if information.I give them credit for how well I am doing so far. Take care:)
