What is up with my current primary care doctor?

This is a long story so I will try to make it as short as I can.

Back in 2005-2006 I was having worsening symptoms similar to what I'm dealing with now. (Symptoms eased up for awhile but now there back)

No one could decide what the cause was. So I under went NUMEROUS tests, blood draws, X-rays, MRIs you know the drill.

Some of my blood tests were coming back with an elevated fasting glucose but my H-A1C levels were about 5.5% so no one was too concerned.

After having an EMG it was discovered I had PN. My neurologist at the time thought it might be a good idea for me to have a 2-3 hour Glucose Tolerance Test.

Let me tell you this test was torturous. 10 hours fasting before hand and I could only drink water. Then they make me drink this orange soda like substance. It was terrible.

They then tried to stick me to get blood every hour. They couldn't draw blood from me and after numerous needle sticks they switched to a portable glucometer, lucky me confused I was so sick and almost passed out at one point all the colored drained from my face.

A few days later my Primary care at the time a nurse practitioner told me my number were off the chart. over 200 mg/dl after two hours. It was enough for her to Dx me with Diabetes and Rx me a test kit and put me on medication.

Since then I changed my diet (as best as I could) and started to exercise. I lost about 50 lbs. and felt better. I was still checking my blood glucose but the NP thought I could stop the meds and that is how things have been for a few years now. I ended up seeing another another primary care after this NP left and went elsewhere.

My new PCP thought I should go see a Podiatrist so I went to see one who ordered me some new shoes and orthotics for my feet. To which my PCP at the time had no problem signing in order for Medicare to pay.

It's now 2008 and I need a new pair of shoes so my Podiatrist writes the order and sends it to my new PCP (I am seeing a new doctor) and the order was denied. My PCP refused to sign off on the shoes because he says I am no longer DIABETIC! mad

Needless to say my Podiatrist is very upset and so am I not too mention confused and bewildered. It was always my understanding that once you are Dx'd as having Diabetes you always have it whether or not you control it by diet or by medication.

I called my pcp's office and asked what was going on and they told me that did not consider me diabetic at all. I then told them about my GTT and I was told that they would try and get it but I never heard anything else about it.

If this doctor it right and I am not diabetic how do you explain my GTT results ? I guess I should be happy that I'm no longer diabetic but I just don't believe it.

The symptoms that started me down this road are now starting up again and on my last series of blood tests my fasting blood glucose was once again elevated.

Unbelievable !

Get a new doctor... preferably one that graduated in the top half of his/her class.... (sigh!)

The GTT says you're diabetic.  Your fasting blood sugar isn't the magic dinosaur number of 126, so you're not diabetic.  Ever feel you're in catch-22?

Late in the topic, but what a range of doctors in this disease.   I have not taken any meds since dx, but went through some illness, and had trouble controling, so added metformin just last April, once a day.  It seemed to be helping overall.  However, went to endo doctor for another health issue (mass on thyroid) and he does not like my fasting numbers (121) I think it was last time but no more than 126, and he ups me to two metformin 850mg a day!  My last AIC was 6.7,  (May 30) not great, but like I said I was dealing with health issues, and that was not long enough I think for the metformin to help.  Now, here you are with the same fasting numbers as me and your doctor says you are not diabetic! ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGggg, I do not understand any of this sometimes.  By the way, the endo, other than my fasting, says I am doing great compared to most patients in his clinic, and I do not even have to see him until next year for a ultra sound for thyroid.   I have a HMO, so primary doctor takes care of most stuff.  Since you posted this a while back I would be curious as to the follow up on how it turned out.   I have found it is very important to be aggressive with our health care providers.  The endo, was so upset, when I told him of my history of colon cancer, and said it was not on my chart!!!!  Take care, Donna
