Fast change in blood sugar?

Although I have been diagnosed with type II, this is not a question about me.  My partners son has type I, but does not regulate himself well, even with insulin.  Last night, he came home from work and felt fine and was in a good mood.  He started to eat a bowl of canned raviolis (I know...) and after the 4th ravioli, felt sick and vomited.  He always runs a very high blood sugar level even with his insulin.  Could this be related to the diabetes, or more likely bad canned food?  His dad shared today that he then became depressed later in the evening, referring to his health and diabetes.  Any comments?

Well, he needs a reality check.  He'd better keep his blood sugar in line or he'll be in deep trouble healthwise later on in life (or sooner).  Type 1s depend on insulin and he needs to either meet with his doctor and establish a solid plan to regulate his blood sugar or follow the plan he was given if he's been avoiding it.  I don't know.  Could have been bad canned food, but he should know better than having a carb overload like that.  This can be dangerous.

I know....I have known him for 6 yrs now (he is 29), and have been trying to convince him of that.  He has no doctor, and has been taking the same insulin dose he was given years ago...and I mean years...ago!  He is as skinny as a rail and  as the coneheads used to say on SNL... "consumes mass quantities" of whatever it is he is eating (good or bad).  Since I have been diagnosed, I have "gently" trying to guide him into better eating habits (I am the grocery shopper, but if I dont get what he wants, he gets it).  I think it is helping a little, but he is very stubborn, and doesn't like anyone, especially me, giving him suggestions.  I really worry about his health as his sugars are consistently in the 200's or higher.  He says he feels bad when they are close to normal ranges (even close to 120).  He has seen the affects of diabetes ( neighbor lost a leg, and he already has circulation problems), but he is an adult and I can't force him to take care of himself.  Sorry..guess just venting.... thanks confused

He's young and foolish.  He'll have to learn soon though.  He's probably so used to high levels of blood sugar that he might feel strange at lower, nearer to normal readings but they would pass soon enough.  He's slowly killing himself with levels of 200.  Good grief.  Suggest he join our Forum!

He just views my comments as "poking my nose in his business". I am really concerned about him though.....I know he is slowly...or not so slowly...killing himself!

I was diagnosed with a fasting blood sugar of 457 and an A1c of 15. When I started to move down toward normal numbers I felt like I was going to die- and did, in fact, go to the ER. A very smart ER nurse told me that when I started to feel low (at 250!), I should take 15 grams of glucose and wait 15 minutes- do it until I felt functional again, always trying to feel functional at closer to normal numbers. Today, my 30 day average is 87- my A1c stays between 5.0 and 5.5. I can tell if my sugar is over 100 or under 70.

That young man can take control.

There is nothing you can do for him. When you act as the "Food Police" it only makes him more contrary. He will have to find his own way through this jungle and until he asks for help there is really nothing anyone can do except lead by example. Maturity will wake him up and by then he will have done untold damage to his organs... Sad situation but he is an adult and responsible for his own health.

Awww Shell

I feel bad for you both!!  Very frustrating to watch someone "pretend" they arent diabetic when you know that he is going to pay a very high price for his actions.

I know 2 people who lost their lives to diabetes complications just because they wouldnt give up their alcohol consumption, both had damaged their kidneys (that was the main damage at that time) one took his life while on a waiting list for a kidney transplant..he was 31 sad     The other was also on an organ transplant list for his kidney damage too, but died before that could happen...he was 33 sad

Shell, is there a possibility that he is suffering from depression...therefore, not really caring at this time about managing his diabetes?  When people are affected at a young age with this disease, I really think they live in denial for a long time..not all of them...but alot...and it seems that it is men who are so stubborn.  Has your hubby tried talking to him?  It has to be very hard on your everyday life, I'm sorry you are going through this.

Like Lanie suggested...would be helpful if he would just peek into the forum here...but....I dont know..sounds like that would be near impossible for you to get him to  do eyes
