Sable: Yes, it's a confusing time. I remember it like it was only 2 1/2 years ago LOL
I, like you, knew nothing about
what I was going through at the time but luckily stumbled across this forum. What the people here have to offer (I guess I'm one of them now) is
permission to take control of what's happening to you and not wait until the next doctor's appointment to
find out.
You're on the right track (diet sodas, etc.) and the track is surprisingly easy to follow. My advice;
1)
Lose weight. Stay away from the obvious starches (flour, cereals, pasta, potatoes ... I know, I know ... all the good stuff) & sugars (duh!). If you do this, you WILL lose weight ... you'll see results in 2 or 3 weeks. I know, hard to believe, but true.
2)
Don't worry about exercise ... right now. That can be added later. Weight loss and diet change are most important. You can (and will want to) exercise, get healthier once you get lighter. I know this from experience.
No, you don't
have to respond to this or any other forum but the more information you give us, the more we can help. Diabetes is an individual malady but all of us here are in it together. Read everything, compare stories, figure out what works for you and you'll do fine.
Don't worry about
not being familiar with forums & such -- that'll come with time. 99.9% of all the people here have good advice. Ignore the rest.
