Hi Sarah. Here's a link to the Mayo Clinic that explains hypoglycemia.
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hypoglycemia/DS00198/DSECTION=causes Of course, we usually think of diabetes but the article also includes other possible causes. I think his doctor needs to do more tests/investigating. I have read that sometimes hypoglycemia which seems to have no cause may be a predictor of diabetes in the future. If he is overweight and inactive and if there is diabetes in his family, he does need to be warned about this. To help head off a hypo (if he's sure that his blood sugar is low), he should eat small meals more often and carry some glucose tabs (available in any pharmacy, no prescription) or a little bottle of OJ. He should not go for long periods of time without eating. Drinking too much alcohol may also contribute to it, especially on an empty stomach.
