Type 1 and Ulcerative Colitis

My 13 y/o son has Type 1 Diabetes as well as Ulcerative Colitis.  Looking for hospital/clinic/doctor with experience in both conditions.  We are located in the midwest, but are willing to travel.  Any advice would be appreciated as the treatments are counterproductive.

Your best bet might be a pediatric teaching hospital. They will be familiar with treating both diseases and hopefully the docs can communicate with each other.

You may also want to post on the Ulcerative Colitis forum here at HealingWell. It's a much busier board and you may get more responses.

Thanks Judy! I did, and I noiticed a lot more activity there as well. I think I will look at the pediatric teaching hospitals. I would just love to have his endo have any experience with another autoimmune disease.

The threatments are counterproductive? What happens? I'm just curious. And what is he taking for the UC? I don't have diabetes but I do have UC. There are always many supplements or more natural treatments that can be tried in addition to meds. Good luck! If you're in Michigan, I went to U of M, although my favorite doctor moved to Ohio. If you're in Ohio, maybe you could go see him, lol.

This is his 2nd time on steroids now as well as Imuran and Lialda for the colitis and he wears a pump to control the diabetes. We have tripled his basal, but his A1C still goes haywire when he is on steroids. Unfortunately, it's the only thing that has controlled the colitis so far :(

May I ask what his weight is and how many mg of Imuran he's on? I weigh 135. I used to be on 125 and now am on 150, if that offers any perspective. You can also consider something like Remicade or Humira, especially if you have tried other things like diet and they don't help. Also, how long has he been on Imuran? It takes a few weeks to kick in. Good luck again.
