Welcome to the Forum, Kara. Snowed in? Are you off from work? Do you work outside your home?
While you're waiting home to get out there is a lot of reading you can do. Please look at the two stickies at the top of the Diabetes forum. You'll find information about
food and meters, too. Also, look through the older threads on our forum for tips on eating.
Basically, when we eat food such as potatoes, rice, bread (all food made with flour which includes pasta, cake, etc.) and of course sugar, our blood sugar will rise because we cannot metabolize carbohydrates normally. The metformin will help your body do this better but this does not mean you should overload on carbs thinking the medicine will take care of it. It won't.
Medication taken for other conditions sometimes cause high blood sugar so you might want to check out the side effects of what you're taking.
Illness and stress can also raise blood sugar, similar to what the food does.
Regular exercise helps keep the blood sugar under control.
So, while you're snowed in, you can do a lot of reading up to help you understand more!
