Hi,

Haven't been here in a while.  Finally got my A1c numbers down to 7.4 from 9.  Currently numbers are running around 100 so next A1c should be lower.  Unfortunately, I am currently battling somekind liver issue - possibly Autoiummune hepatitis.  Doctor took me off metformin because it can cause inflammation in the liver and increased blood cell size/anemia.

If it's not one thing it's another.

Well, good news bad news?  Very good that your blood sugar is coming down.  What's going on with the liver?  That's one of the warnings of metformin.  Are you also on a statin?  Do you take a lot of Tylenol?  I hope you can get that resolved.

Hi Lanie,

It appears the metformin may have contributed to the blood cell size and possibly caused further inflammation of Fatty Liver to the point where it may have progressed to NASH. I am no longer on a statin (but had taken one for years so may also be part of the mix) and was on tylenlol until March for leg injury.

Won't know more on the liver for several weeks as they are trying to get a biopsy scheduled.

It sounds like there were several contributors to the problem, like the perfect storm. I hope the biopsy finds the answer, and I'm glad you're not taking the different drugs now. Maybe the combination did it? How are you feeling?

I actually feel fine and have dropped 38 pounds in roughly 9 months. The problem showed up during a scan for swollen lymphnodes and anemia. They never found the cause of the lymphnodes (and insurance won't approve repeat scan), the anemia has corrected itself but liver enzymes went up and only started coming down after getting off the metformin and tylenlol. Was put of Mobic for arthritis after consult with GI/Hep doc.

Just praying things were caught early enough to stop or slow progression. I've had enough health problems recently to last more than 1 lifetime and it gets depressing. So glad for this forum.

I'm sure dealing with a few different health problems at the same time can take a toll on anyone, body and mind, so just take care of yourself by eating correctly. Sometimes people 'forget' to eat right if they're dealing with health problems and have many different medical appointments, etc. So, for the diabetes, I think you understand the best way to help control the blood sugar. How have you been able to lose the weight? Are you able to get in any exercise like walking, etc.?

I'm doing weight watchers and eating a hand ful of nuts in addition to increasing activities such as photography (which makes me walk more)

Good for you! I also eat nuts as a snack. Sometimes I cut up pieces of cheese, too. I recently bought a book on 'flexibility' which has lots of stretching routines. These are not aerobic exercises but stretches for all parts of the body to help increase mobility and flexibility and balance. Some of these seem to be yoga, according to my daughter who knows more than I do about that.

Good! And look into building some stronger muscles, too. That's important for women. I got interested in 'flexibility' because of physical therapy for my hip bursitis. The therapist was wonderful and instructive explaining 'why' I had to do this or that stretch and exercise in order to stop the cycle of my bouts of bursitis.
