I'm glad he's trying to get in control of this. That's half the battle. So many people begin in denial! Please encourage him to join HW and we'll make him feel at home.
And send him this website for lots of information about
diabetes:
http://www.bloodsugar101.com/Cereal will raise blood sugar. Advocates say but it's full of fiber and nutrients (that is added during processing) but the bottom line is that cereal is a grain and will raise blood sugar. The problem is it's easy to eat since it's ready-made. This is where breakfast has to be thinking outside the cereal box. Some eggs a couple of times of week (if he's worried about cholesterol) or other food that's normally eaten at lunch or dinner can become breakfast.
A vegetable plate (not potatoes) with an egg or a piece of chicken or slice of turkey. Salads, soups. Here's a short list of good food to be eaten any time of day: broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, celery, leafy greens including spinach (raw and cooked), mushrooms, zucchini, eggplant, green beans, bell peppers, carrots in moderation, avocados in moderation - carb content determines what we eat which is why potatoes are not on this list. Once the blood sugar is under control, a taste of potatoes once in a while is ok but not on a regular basis.
Beans have protein and some carbs so he has to figure out how his blood sugar reacts to them. Nuts and cheese are good snacks, too. Low-fat, non sugar yogurt is good. Kroger has its own brand of this called CarbMaster. Greek style yogurt is good, too.
Fasting blood sugar should be under 100. Two hours after eating should be less than 120 - 130 - although lots of doctors and brochures from the American Diabetes Association will give much higher parameters for this. However, he needs to know that higher blood sugar over a period of time will cause organ damage. Since he already has neuropathy, I'm sure he understands this. He will find all this information on the Bloodsugar101 website above.
There is no magic bullet as to which food to eat. I do not think there is food that will lower blood sugar because food doesn't have that ability. Food would be classified into how they affect blood sugar which is really based on their carb content. Proteins like meats don't cause much of a rise. And processed food is notorious for having unhealthy ingredients like trans fats, saturated fats, chemicals, etc. The breading on some food is a good example of this.
He can get a handle on this, I promise!
