Glucose meter repeatability

I'm a newly diagnosed mild Type II diabetic just starting to use a home meter (Accu-check Aviva). As a test, I repeat my fasting measurement twice (about a minute apart) and have discovered a 20 to 30 point difference. Is this typical? Has anyone else tried this?

I test once and record the reading...I will only test twice if the reading doesn't seem to match my feelings ( numbers way too high or way too low.) I used to test twice and sometimes three times in a row and just couldn't handle the stress of the different readings. Sometimes the readings would nearly match and other times they would be very different and that would upset me.

I used to go crazy when I would get two meter readings, one minute apart, from the same finger prick, and be 20 points different. Then I found an article in Consumer Reports evaluating meters. Consumer Reports rates meters for accuracy and consistency and LanieG usually posts the most current evaluations in a sticky thread.

I now use FreeStyle Freedom Lite which is one of the top rated meters and now my daily readings are more consistent.
