HI all, Sorry been in hospital.

Hi gang,

Sorry I have been away. I went to hospital because I wasnt able to eat without getting sick for a few days, not a good thing for a diabetic. I figured just a stomach flu or something silly. After 7 hours in the ER I was admitted with an unknown infection. 2 days later I am in ICU and not responing to anything they are giving me. A week later and now got in under control, I am home and still getting results from all the tests, so far they have no idea what kind of infection, or where it was the worst.

They are now saying things like I have "M R S A"? Best I understand is that means I am now resisant to antibiotics. Could be from all the antibiotics and other drugs I have been given over the years. OH Goody something new to deal with. mad

I am home now and will check in when I am feeling up to it, Behave and be sure to wash behind your ears while I am busy. nono

Sorry to hear the MRSA diagnosis... I believe this means that the infections you have are becoming resistant to current antibiotics. One of the major causes of this is if you have been treated with many antibiotics in the past and some of the bugs from those infections survived. The ones who survive become resistant to the drugs that were used. I can see that if you've had a lot of health issues in the past, you have had lots of drug treatments to help you and now the bugs are ganging up on you.

(For anyone who is reading this, one way to try to protect yourself from MRSA is to always finish all of your pills when you are on an antibiotic treatment, EVEN IF YOU FEEL ALL BETTER. This won't guarantee that you won't get MRSA, it's just one way of trying to prevent it. Often times people who need to be treated with multiple antibiotics develop it anyway and AL is a perfect example.)

I'm sending prayers your way to help your system fight and heal, and wishing you a quick recovery. In the mean time, could you appoint a friend or relative to let us know if you get knocked out of commission again? I got a little nervous after you were gone so long... Yeah, I know... Nervous Nellie, that's me! Take care, buddy.

dear Pincushion, i sure hope you are feeling better. My mother, who at age 91 broke her hip and went in the hospital to have surgery on her hip, got MRSA at the hospital. We were told that it was an infection that vulnerable, frail (in her case) patients in hospitals can pick up. I had the idea that it was something that was existing in the hospital environment. Diabetics have compromised immune systems so we are more vulnerable to infections and all. My mother was also diabetic. I think it was Jeannie that wrote she thought that MRSA could be gotten from not taking all your antibiotics and therefore your germs overcame the antibiotics. She could be right --i just dont know myself--i was going on what the hospital told us about my mother. I am going to google MRSA and see if i can understand how it is gotten.

I learned clean to dirty in nurse's training and you got it backwards! Rinse from the fingertips (cleanest) back to the wrists (which are connected to the 'dirty' arm that wasnt' washed.) Allowing water to drip off your fingertips will contaminate the hands as well. This is why the docs always walk around with their hands in the air as they are gowned and gloved for surgery. Just being a nitpicker here... Don't take offense.
