Diabetes and chronic thrush?

Hello all!

I'm a type-1 diabetic going on 20 years now and not until a few years ago I started getting persistant thrush in my mouth and fungal infections on my fingers. Nowadays I have lost 5 finger nails completely and I am in the process of losing 2 more. The thrush in my mouth, on my tongue and lips and in the back of my throat is always there and never goes away. It's really painful and because of it I became antisocial because I didn't want the people I was talking to to notice the thrush on my lips and in my mouth. The thrush is so bad that it is beginning to have a negative effect on my teeth.

Have any of you on this forum experienced similar ailments? If so, what was it that you did that helped with the thrush???

Long term use of antibiotics and long term high blood sugar can both cause thrush.  What have your blood sugar readings been?

LanieG thank you so much for the information! Unfortunately my blood sugars have been pretty good. My last A1C was 7.6 and I took that back in Jan 2014. I know thrush is common in diabetics who tend to run on the high side. For a good diabetic like myself I find it hard to believe that the thrush I am experiencing is due to diabetes.

Maybe it is something else that is affecting my immune system?

Hi again.  JiBa, if your A1c was 7.6, then your average blood sugar was about 170 and that's not good at all.  Please read the stickies at the top of the Diabetes forum and also this website http://www.bloodsugar101.com/

Are you on diabetes medication?

Welcome to HealingWell, Trudy. How about if you create a new post to introduce yourself? How long have you been a diabetic? Are you on any medication?

I'm sorry you are enduring thrush so often. Do you see your doctor about it? I have had thrush a couple times in the past year and anti-bionics to get rid of but 2 different ones. I also rinse my mouth alternate days with salt water and apple cider vinegar and it seems to help. I hope this gets resolved for you, take care.

If you want some serious help for the thrush I can recommend an herbal solution. It's called USNEA
and is fermented tree litchen. I suffered with chronic yeast infections for years and discovered this
in my 7th herbal book and it works soooo well. It's the only medicine I cannot find in pill form and I
will admit it smells like heck and tastes the same. You can put it in juice but I don't like anything other
than coffee, tea, milk and water so that doesn't help me for taste. My grandson suffers from thrush
often because of antibiotics and it works on him too.
