I am 60 years old, a diabetic since 2005. My diabetes was
well controlled with pioglitazone 45mg daily. The FBS was always in the range
90-120mg/dl range. HBA1C was 6.
Recently, I developed a shoulder bursitis; since the
standard treatment of SWD, NSAIDS and physio did not work I took prednisolone
course from June 15th. I took
40mg daily for first week and then 30mg daily for another week. (FBS one month
prior to steroid course was 121.5mg/dl)
At the end of second week, I noticed my blood sugar shooting
up, also with sugar in urine and I abruptly stopped steroids getting scared. FBS was 222.8mg/dl.
I started glipizide 5mg daily in addition to the usual pioglitazone.
After two weeks of glipizide the blood sugar came down to
138mg/dl still higher than the pre steroid course. Being a month since I stopped steroids, I decided to
stop glipizide altogether and
getting back to my previous drug I
was taking pioglitazone 45mg.
I tested my FBS after
08 days and to my surprise and dismay the FBS increased to
157mg/dl.
I thought given a time of one month would be adequate to
recover back to my old pre-steroid sugar levels but apparently did not.
I started glipizide 2.5mg and tested FBS after 6 days (on 14-8-14)
and FBS is 146.9mg/dl
I must also mention I
am an asthmatic and on Seretide evohaler 250micrograms (fluticasone) 2 puffs
daily. Since I started steroid I did not take my inhaler and so far to date,
did not get any asthma which I used to have daily. So it could be that still
the effects of steroids are lingering. It could be a more favorable explanation
as to why pre-steroid sugar levels are not reached.
I am worried whether
I will be able to get back to the
previous level of control of diabetes with the drug I was using then, and this
steroid short burst will not affect the diabetes permanently.
