YES, stress increases blood sugar. What's going on is you start to stress out and your adrenal glands, little guys on your kidneys, release cortisol, a hormone. Cortisol is a natural glucocorticoid, it increases insulin resistance.
I am currently on, and getting off, prednisone which is an artificial version of Cortisol. Your body naturally produces about 5mg a day.
Your liver loves to see your blood sugar levels above a certain level, when it doesn't see that it converts some more complex forms of energy that it has into sugar and puts it into the blood.
So all in all
Stress > cortisol > insulin resistance > liver thinks blood sugar is too low > sugar level is increased by the liver
