high blood sugar with bronchitis

I have had bronchitis and on 3rd round of antibiotic. Blood sugars running high. Dr wants to put me on prednisone which will shoot my blood sugar out of the park. I am having DIFFICULTY breathing. Using nebulizer 2-3 times a day and rescue inhaler 4 times a day. Thoughts. I've tried to avoid the prednisone bit it may be only thing to get my pipes opened up.

Welcome back! Normally if steroids are prescribed for other conditions for diabetics, the doctor will either adjust your present diabetes medication or add insulin temporarily to keep your blood sugar normal.

Has your doctor discussed changing your diabetes meds for this?

Ive spoken to her once at the outset of the bronchitis. not since. she had me up my add 2 5mg glipizide am and pm till antibiotic kicked in, which it never did. still waking up to fasting glucose of 205, 184, 172, 167 this am. had cut back to 1 glipizide am and pm. so today back to 2 am and pm.

Please get a hold of your doctor today. Your blood sugar is too high and it must be brought under more control. Maybe it's time to see an endocrinologist to control it, but at the very least, your doctor needs to work with you to lower your blood sugar.

Also, if you're eating a lot of carbs, your blood sugar will also go very high, so maybe you need to look at what you're eating?

Right this minute my blood sugar is 110 after taking met 1000 and 10mg of glipizide. It's conceivable this latest antibiotic is finally working.will keep checking throughout day and see what tomorrow morning fasting brings.
I so appreciate your replies. I do have an endocrinologist and will call her tomorrow to update on my readings.
I do watch my carbs very carefully.

Just being sick can raise our blood sugar. And pain and anxiety can do this, too. Hopefully you'll be seeing better readings and feeling better!

Your body is under a lot of stress fighting the Bronchitis which in turn will raise your sugar, so once you get rid of this virus you will get back to normal.......so don't change too much of your routine because once you are healthy you will be in for a shock

Thank you both for your replies. I have been more stressful along with this bronchial thing. Husband doing back to back travel. Sick Corgi and my adult son moved in for two months. That's almost enough to raise anyone's blood sugar. I AM walking every morning but instead of lowering 50 points or so it's only been lowering a few points.

Oh gosh. You won the trifecta! Traveling husband, sick pet and adult son moving back. And bronchitis to top it off. It reminds me of the old play (and movie?) Stop the World - I Want to Get Off!
