Metformin - advice please

hi all

I had been advised to try Merformin as I have Polycyctic Ovaries (PCOS).  Apprently it can help my symptoms drastically.  however, I know that it is really a diabetes drug and before I decide what to do, id like to have any infomration you are able to give me. 

Anyone taked it for PCOS?  what was the result?

Anyone had Metformin - are there bad side effects? (do they wear off quickyl) or has it worked wonders for you?

What happens when you dcome off of Metformin?

Do a google search on PCOS and metformin and you'll get a bunch of articles discussing the pros and cons. My side effects with Metformin basically is diarhea (sp?).. with carbs. When I overdo... I go pooh! I won't be able to discontinue my metformin unless my diabetes situation improves drastically.

Hi Vikki,

I have PCOS and I have been taking 1500mg for the past 3 yrs, the side effects do go away,for me it took 2 weeks, diarhea was the one problem for me too but again it did go away in time.

after taking this for a couple of months my periods became regular and my cysts started going away too. So I do swear by this medication. anymore information please feel free to contact me.

Anxiety/Panic attacks dx 1990
M.S. dx June 29th 2005
Anemia dx Jan 2005

Meds: Amitriptyline
Lorazepam
Celexa
Ferrous Glouconate
Ibuprofen 600mg
and soon to start on
Rebif or Avenox

I am a bit confused as I am currently on Cyproterone acetate for PCOS.  I know some pros and cons related to Metformin but I really dont know what to do - carry on with my meds, or change to metformin.  apparently if I chose to try metformin I should be regularly checked, but I just got my prescription from the Dr and a request to go back in 3 months!  I am confused about whether it will help me symptoms?  Main symptoms of my PCOS are Panic attacks, anxiety, depression, lack of periods, dizziness and headaches.

Pls feel free to offer me more information.
