Hello Acquiesce and Welcome to HW!!
Your Son and I have at least 2 things in common. Type 1 Diabetes and dxd. in the same month. I feel sad for you and your Son. He will probably go through the 5 stages of grief(Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance), since he is losing a part of himself and his freedom for some time. Some Diabetics sometimes only go through 2 stages like Depression and Acceptance. You both have a lot of info to absorb. It will be overwhelming at times. The learning lesson is endless since things change, ever so often. *Lanie just taught me something today! It will be overwhelming at times, so understand what you can and take a breather. Anytime is bad to be dxd. with Diabetes but especially when one is a Teenager. They are going through so much, as is. I hated it since I felt Diabetes was always in my way.
On the upside, there are so many more advances in Diabetes equipment, Insulin and help/knowledge especially on forums with People's experiences. Thank God for the computer and Insulin. If your Son is a techy then he will probably grow to love his pump and Continuous Glucose Monitoring System(CGM), if he wants them. Before he gets a pump however, he will need to have a good understanding about
Multiple Daily Injections(MDI) and Carb Counting.
Another upside, I'm so glad that the "fluke" occurred. 25.3 is quite high and he could have easily slipped into a Diabetes Ketoacidosis(DKA) Coma within a few hours. Been there, done that when I was 18.
I don't know what this site is, I was just looking for a low carb meal plan for your Son.
(See the link below. I made it a hot link but it wouldn't stay in this place! Sorry!)
He should not have muffins, pancakes. waffles anything made with white flour including white bread as Lanie mentioned, or potatoes or rice. Whole wheat is okay. It's usually only 11 or 12 grams of carbs. There is low carb bread but it doesn't taste good. Cream soups are not good either until he gets his sugars under better control. He is a growing boy after all(bless your heart). Please get him to Love veggies. Melting cheese on it makes it taste better. The Dietician will probably give him a diet of "normal foods". The thing is Drs. and Dieticians don't live in the body or home of a Diabetic, so they do not know what goes on. Different foods can affect Diabetics differently. They just see numbers and hope the Diabetic is telling the truth about
exercise and food intake. Giving Insulin dosages with this lack of info doesn't usually work. Blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, 1/2 apple, yogurt with Splenda, Stevia, etc. are good too. He doesn't need Mayo on his sandwich. There is Almond Vanilla milk which I drink mostly. It's only 2g of carbs for a glass of milk. He may not like it. Sorry, I didn't put these in a list.
Another upside, I was dxd. when I was 3 years old and I'm 57 now. We used long glass syringes and had to boil them daily. We tested our urine with an eye dropper, water and a very dangerous Clinitest tablet in
a test tube. We weren't allowed any candy or sweets, so we couldn't go out for Hallowe'en, enjoy Easter eggs, Christmas candy, etc. I hated that part too. SO if I could do this, he can certainly too and
he will be able to eat normal foods in moderation and junk food, if he wants occasionally when he understands carb counting and Insulin dosages and supposedly better when he gets a pump.
I have severe Rheumatoid Arthritis which I recently read is similar to Lupus, so I know how it goes with the Prednisone. How much are you taking of Pred? Try to relax ...I know it's hard.
