Type 1 diabetic constipated but not hard stools, need advice

Hi all, I've had diabetes for 45 years (since age 2) and have been having problems over the last 3 weeks with bowel movements. It is really starting to bother me. I feel nausea and bloated. My stool isn't hard, it is soft and I tried taking correctol and felt diarrhea cramps but when I went to the restroom I literally had to strain to get liquid stool and 2 inch pencil like stool out of my system. i think there is a problem with my nerves because i have been diagnosed with autonomic neuropathy in my bladder so when i urinate it takes me a while to even pee and it stops and goes and is very light. Sometimes I sit and wait ten minutes to pee but can't so I give up. Now the constipation is so bad it is pushing on my bladder making me pee more often. I have been taking murilax but don't drink enough water. This is embarrassing but I was hoping to get some kind of help to get this out of my system without having to push it out and i did see a nurse and she suggested the murilax but I don't that is safe for my organs because sucks the water out of you and doesn't give my organs the water it needs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi again. I'm really sorry you're having this problem. I don't know what more to tell you other than you need to drink more water and should be eating plenty of vegetables for fiber. You might want to look at recipes for cauliflower and broccoli.

However, maybe this needs the attention of your doctor. It might be more than just needing more fiber and water.

As a TD1, you have a 10% chance (or more) of developing celiac disease at any time (same genes). Since you are experiencing nausea and bloating I would ask your doctor to screen (simple blood test) for celiac disease.

Hi Janet. sorry to hear you're having issues. as a 33 year type 1, I also struggle with bowel and stomach issues. Your case sounds like my diagnosis - gastroparesis, or delayed stomach emptying due to nerve damage - vagus nerve I believe.

I will make a post on my fighting this condition the last 8 months, from fighting to get a diagnosis, to still waiting on relief, to things starting out as constipation/diarrhea, to dry heaving every morning and losing energy and ability to function.... If you have this condition, I hope it is not drastic - my solids took 440 minutes to leave stomach in the nuclear test - normal person is 90 minutes. Pending your delay, if any, you may have a solution. Best of luck.

I see you originally posted a few months ago, so I hope by now you have some answers, but my advice to you is TAKE THE MIRALAX. I spent Valentines Day at the ER with an impacted bowel. It is extremely embarrassing and uncomfortable. Make sure you get enough fiber. Miralax isn't harmful at all, it's really quite mild. I know because I take it on a semi-regular basis. I try to drink 60 ozs of liquid a day. Somedays I do better than others.
