I'm a 25 year old female. In my early 20's I began to experience feelings which I was certain were low blood sugar related. I mentioned to my doctor but he said it's hard to diagnose hypoglycemia and I should get a glucose meter. So for the past 5 years, whenever I felt weak or shaky, I'd eat something sweet and feel better right away.
Recently however, I began to experience the shaky feeling almost daily and finally invested in a glucose meter.
I really, really try to eat regularly but I often feel weak just an hour after eating.
Anyway, even when I feel shaky, can't concentrate etc. my glucose levels are NORMAL, ranging from 4.8/mmol to 5.8/mmol And low blood sugar is anything below 3.9/mmol.
So even with normal glucose levels, I start to feel shaky-NOT hungry and after I eat I feel better.
What could this mean?

hi, sounds very metabolic, in terms of metabolism. not enough carb to keep you going, thus you are dipping into hypo. take care.

Hi Janecb and welcome to HealingWell. I think elephant is right about
it being metabolic. The best doctor to help you with this is an endocrinologist because there are many reasons our blood sugar doesn't behave and this kind of doctor is a specialist in all the glands.
The best advice for bouts of hypoglycemia that I can give you is to eat smaller and more frequent meals with even amounts of protein and carbs. These "meals' would actually be snacks about
six or more times a day. Meat and vegetables, eggs with cheese and vegetables, plain yogurt with added fruit (not sugar), peanut butter or cream cheese and celery. This is to try to keep the blood sugar more level.
But as I said the best place to start is with an endo. I think you would need complete blood work done.
Maybe others have different ideas and will post. Sorry I can't help more.

Thank you for your responses. Not sure what metabolic means tough?
As for bloodwork, I get it done annually and everything is within norm
Including thyroid hormones. That's why I'm confused how an endo could help?

Metabolic just means how our bodies break down the food we eat, how we digest it and use it. The reason I suggested an endo is because you are having episodes of hypoglycemia and an endocrinologist specializes in matters involving blood sugar and all that.

I don't know. (I'm not a doctor, of course, which is why a doctor needs to figure this out.) The only thing I can think of is that
maybe
your blood sugar has been much higher at other times and you've become used to it being higher and when it's actually normal you feel odd or shaky as if it's too low. This happens a lot to people who experience really high blood sugar at times.
Since you do have a meter, you might want to start testing when you first wake up ("fasting") and then before a meal and two hours after the meal. You need to test before and after.
Or, maybe it's not the blood sugar at all but something else.
I would hope that your doctor could check further into this. You might need more kinds of tests.

yep i range higher, thus a hypo for me would not be considered one under the normal guidelines. i agree with an endo, they are specialists in this area.
