My friend has diabetes and says she has a black spot in her eye. Cab anyone tell me what this might be. It seems to blur her vision. She is very scared about this. Thanks , Westcoast Joe

Hi Joe,

Im not an eyedoctor, but Im going to take an educated guess at your friends problem.  We all know diabetes can cause retinopathy.  Well. Spots are small, semi-transparent or cloudy specks or particles within the eye that become noticeable when they fall within the line of sight. They may also appear with flashes of light. Most spots are normal and rarely cause blindness. But spots can indicate more serious problems. On rare occasions, vitreous detachment can cause small tears or holes in the retina. The damaged part of the retina subsequently does not work properly and a blind or blurred spot in vision results. If untreated, retinal tears or holes can continue to worsen and severe vision loss can result if the retina becomes detached.

So what does all this mean....it means even if Im wrong your friend should SEE AN EYE DOCTOR TODAY!!!

When i had black spot and floater in my eye, my opthomologist (sp?) said it was bcuz i had a hole in my retina. It was so annoying that in the summer time i thought i was being attacked by bees, but it was the black spots.

I have had three laser surgeries to have the holes mended, but i still have eye problems. It is important to see an eye doctor for this as soon as possible. Tell your friend not do as i did and try to diagnosis herself, let a specialist help her.

I've had floaters about 5 yrs.They come & go.

Hello,

One thing this could be is something I have had several times and am going through right now.  It's bleeding inside the retina which can be be fixed with laser surgery.  I have had several laser surgeries and now can see 20/25 without glasses.  Thats how well it works.  Does your friend have symptoms like when looking at striaght lines they appear wavy?  I would tell them to see their eyedoctor right away.  If left untreated it will only get worse.
