Hi
Been a regular for the last few years with a Fistula in ano but got over that and thought I was moving on.
Recently I have had what my doctor described as a simple case of thrush bought on by having so many anti biotics while being treated for the Fistula.
The problem is getting worse, I have been told I have a UTI this is after three months of various anti fungal creams. Now I am back on amoxicillin with no improvement and my penis head is very red and looks ulcerated, there is a stinging effect after I have a pee which goes off after a time.
I have no discharge or smell throughout any of this, has anyone any ideas on what I may be suffering with.
I am getting very depressed due to this, I was just getting back to work and rebuilding my life.
I know that it's not an STI because I have not been intimate with anyone for nearly three years due to my Fistula, although I wonder if you can get one from a dirty public toilet.

Hi Rockyman and welcome. If you have diabetes, sometimes it's common to have UTIs and when treated with antibiotics, sometimes other infections start because of the the system's good bacteria are wiped out. This is why doctors should tell their patients to start eating some yogurt or drinking kefir when they're on antibiotics. It's probably a very good idea to keep on eating yogurt (or drinking kefir) regularly so you can protect these good bacteria in any case.

I don't think whatever you have is caused from a dirty public toilet but I would suggest going to a urologist to have this taken care of!

Thanks for the information, I am having natural yogurt every day also got an appointment at the hospital for this Thursday so may get some answers.
I expect they will test me for diabetes and a few other possibilities.
Will keep you posted.

Hello again. Absolutely, yes, you need to go back and be evaluated for this infection. As far as I know, for common UTIs, an antibiotic like amoxicillin is fine but if it's thrush or other fungal infection, you should be given anti-fungal medication.

I hope you can get this resolved. Sorry I can't can't help more.

Been to hospital for tests and all tests came back clear, Doctor said definitely not thrush and test said no yeast infection.
Still got the symptoms of red patch on penis plus slight burning on having a pee.
The thinking is now that it could be a skin condition and I am being referred to a dermatologist at the skin clinic.
The only meds I take now is lactulose and paracetamol, wondering if that may be the issue, if anyone on lactulose has these issues I would be interested to know.
Will update when I have seen the skin specialist.

Hi, well, I'm glad they are able to rule some conditions out. Good luck with the dermatologist. Have you ever been tested for allergies?

No not yet, one thing I need to ask is what is the best or standard test for diabetes.
I have had the fasting glucose test plus another non fasting blood test both came back ok it that was back in May this year.
Is there a way I can work it out myself.

Hello again. A fasting morning blood test for blood sugar is standard. There is another blood test, non-fasting, which can be taken at any time of the day called the HbA1c or A1c for short. This measures the average of your blood sugar over the prior three months. Keep in mind that the acceptable results for these tests are dictated here in the US by the American Diabetes Association (ADA), and if you're elsewhere the national institute of health in your country also sets that standard. Please click on the link in my signature which goes to a website that discusses everything about blood sugar including information from studies that our ADA guidelines are actually too high to avoid diabetes complications over time.

The only blood test that can definitively say if a person is diabetic (or at the very least that he or she does not metabolize carbs normally) is the GTT, the Glucose Tolerance Test in which you drink a very highly sugary liquid on an empty stomach and your blood is tested at one hour and two hours.

Is there a reason you suspect you might have diabetes?

Just grabbing at straws I guess, there has to be an answer to what is causing the irritation and sore patch but can't seem to be getting anywhere.
Cut out lactulose now but early days so will have to see what happens if and when the skin clinic appointment appears.

Just got my appointment through for the hospital and it's on December 5th, really disappointed with the English NHS .
Will have to go back and try for a date a bit sooner.
As for the condition, I went to the drop I clinic due to increased pain and burning sensation.
Doctor there thought either genital psoriasis or a cancer of some kind, again really worried now.
I noticed the red spots on other area of penis as well and feeling ashamed even though all tests for STI have come back clear and the swab test said no staph or strep or yeast infection.
I have wondered if my vitamin D deficiency is part of the problem and so trying supplements again, although the last time I used supplements i had a tingling skin on my tummy and stopped.

I hope you can get into that appointment sooner than December for heaven sake! about vitamins and supplements: I think it's good to make sure you're eating a well-balanced diet but taking a complete vitamin/mineral pill is normally fine (ask your doctor, of course), but then make sure you are not deficient in some vitamins like D and others. There are tests for these deficiencies.

Had a difficult weekend and had to go to the A&E department at my hospital. The doctor I saw has suggested a auto immune issue where my body has started to attack me.
I need to get some tests for this and Will try to get my own doctor to authorise the tests.
Have you any advice on this because it's a field I have no real knowledge on although Google helps but not sure of specific area to look at.
Really getting worried about not healing and feeling a bit neglected.

Oh gee, Rockyman. I'm so sorry and I wish some doctor could have found out what's going on by now! If you Google "autoimmune diseases" several come up including type 1 diabetes but there are particular ones involving the skin like psoriasis. I don't know how they test for these skin problems but I feel frustrated that you haven't found any diagnosis yet! Have any creams helped?

Had biopsy and just waiting for the results. I am more certain that it is being caused by omeprazole as I had to start taking them 2 days before biopsy due to first attack of gout which has now cleared . Having looked back at my diary I find every time I take omeprazole and naproxen I get a flare up of sore and ulcerated penis.
I have checked online and there are numerous stories of similar problems with taking omeprazole.
If I leave them off i wondered how long for the skin to heal.
My consultant says it's a condition called zoons balanitis which can be caused by drug interactions but not sure if biopsy would confirm the cause or not.
As for the gout I have to take another blood test to check for Ulric acid and kidney function.

Hello again! Wow, it seems you have to be a detective to figure out what's going on! However, I'm hoping you are correct about the cause being the omeprazole and naproxen. Fingers crossed that these are the culprits so you can avoid them. Thanks for the update. This kind of information helps others who read these posts!

Glad to help, I know from searching myself I have found a lot of help especially with the Fistula problem I had.
I guess being sat at home can send you a bit crazy when all you want to do is get back to work and start rebuilding my life like getting back to swimming and long walks in the country but it all seems a long way off.
I am hoping that I am right about the omeprazole but it could be coincidence
But we'll see.
If anyone has any idea what the biopsy can tell me I would be interested.

Still waiting for biopsy results and still in a lot of pain.
Back ache is still there but tolerable but worried that my gout is returning.
The urine still stings a lot and I have asked for another diabetes check. Hope the skin irritation heals up.
