Need help with issues on insulin

I'm having some new issues with the insulin. I'm on Humalog 75/25 twice a day. I have stress induced diabetes
and am using 18 units in the morning and 16 at night. The last 6 months I've packed on 20 pounds without
changing my diet and am having issues with my hands swelling to the point my rings are super tight. This is
all new and I've been on the same insulin for a little over a year. My endocrinologist had me raise it from
12 units (6.5 A1-C) and even with good numbers the A1-C went to over 7 without changing anything. Has
anyone else had issues like this and I sure could use the help. Thanks..........Rose

Hi Nana Monster, welcome back but sorry for this problem. I can't help you with the insulin problem. This is where your doctors need to guide you. There are a couple of members here on insulin who could give you suggestions if they read your post though.

High levels of insulin can make you gain weight so I presume that's what's happening. Being a type 2 (I'm pretty sure you're type 2, right?), the amount of insulin needed depends on what your blood sugar readings are and if you're eating a lot of carbs, then your blood sugar is high which would need more insulin.

I hope you can get answers, especially because of those side effects. I am sorry I can't give you better answers.

Lani, I just called the doctor's office and am waiting to hear back. I walked 11.25 miles yesterday and the
sugar was still 130 this morning. about half were on my machine (Tony Little "Gazelle") and the
other half were walking in the woods. Sugar hit 260 the other day with only having breakfast.
Getting kind of worried. Let you know what he says.

Hi Nana Monster:

Although I am on Insulin, I am a Type 1, so not very helpful. I haven't used 75/25 since the 1980's. My Endo changed me to a long-acting Insulin(Lente) and a fast-acting Insulin(Toronto/Regular) because I was having too many lows back then. It is more difficult to be on the 75/25 rather than the long-lasting and fast acting. You have to eat exactly by the rules, on time, etc. with the 75/25 or...Trouble.

Many of the Type 2's, I've read about on other sites are using 2 Insulins, fast(Humalog or Novolog) and long(Levemir, Lantus). They usually count carbs like we do, so they take one shot of fast-acting at each meal and one or 2 shots of Levemir or Lantus. Yes, more shots but worth it. Some Type 2's are pumpers. Talk about advancement!

I was recently switched to long-acting Insulin Tresiba. One shot a day and it works better for me and some others. I have (4) 5-vial boxes of Levemir in my fridge which I don't know what to do with now. I hate to give it back to the Pharmacy since they'll just throw it in the garbage, probably. They are not allowed to sell it twice.
No clue about the weight gain.

Thanks for the info Ouchie. I went to the endo this afternoon and it might be a reaction
to the CBD oil I'm using. I used one last summer from one shop (oil based) and switched
to a local shop (water based). The latter worked great for the tremors and kicking in the
painkillers. So, the doctor thinks it might be a reaction to it. It's the only thing I've changed
since last fall. I can't do a pump as I'm allergic to glues, I get lipoma tumors from hitting the
wrong spot in my stomach. I had hundreds before the shots, now there's more sad He's
got me using 18 at night and 20 in the morning now...let's cross our toes smile

Nana Monster, your blood sugar levels are directly related to what you're eating but I know I've posted this to you before and asked you to read the link in my signature. If you're still eating high carbs, your blood sugar will be high and since you're on insulin, you'll need more to cover for them. Needing more insulin will cause weight gain. Best of luck.

Are you combining the insulin with Metformin? Metformin gives insulin longer activity. Lantus is useless. Endo had me on jardiance for awhile, however the combo form, glyxambi has shown excellent efficacy in reducing insulin dosage and am told weight loss.

Exercise is counter productive if ya smashing carbs, not indicating you are. But what we shovel in is what the bgl will confirm.

I use novorapid, glyxambi and Metformin. I consulted a dietitian even though I am a old school diabetic! It helped. Visceral fat is what I am beginning to reduce, this is the sugar store house.

When I started exercising for a long cycling trip my weight dropped by 8 kg. I started eating a lot more vegetables but did not really change the amount of insulin I was taking. But since I had just shed that much weight and my insulin response was now much higher, I managed to halve my rapid acting insulin dosage. However, I have now gained weight most likely in both muscle and fat. My insulin dosage did not need to rise though which is interesting. Reminder, I have this constant glucose meter now and the estimated hba1c reading it gives me has never been better. Still, it has now only reached the target area for now.

I'm on Tresiba and Fiasp currently. I've learned that I really should take Fiasp, the rapid-acting one, first thing in the morning. If I didn't, my blood glucose would hike up even without eating. The usual effect, just never saw it that strong before the meter. If I took two slices of bread, and only after that took my insulin, my bg would invariably rise from hypos to hyper thanks to the effect. The blood glucose sensor is delayed by 15-30 minutes and while the insulin is rapid, it's not that rapid.
