Hi, I'd like to know who else out there suffers from Avascular Necrosis? I've had both knees grafted, boy if that isn't a trip,they really don't understand why it started in my knees it normally starts in the hips, I'm curious how many others suffers from this,I think it's the most painful thing I've ever had to deal with even w/ my Lupus, it horrible. Would love to hear from anyone else that has this. Thanks for replys.

I've never heard of it. Is it another lovely diabetes complication we have to watch out for?

Hi Nonnie,

From what I've briefly read about it, it sounds like it could be associated with your Lupus. I didn't really find any links to Diabetes specifically, though. Did I miss something?

Hi, It's Nonnie, Avascular Necrosis actually is in a way related to the Lupus, but only through the steriod therapy. I found out in 1992 when I had the first bone graft, that it can come from the steriods. Each time I had a bone graft done I was on crutches for 1 yr. each time. First time they took a bone from my hip and used it in my right knee,and then the second bone graft in 2001 they used bone from a bone bank to do the grafting it is very painful. But it is true what doesn't kill ya , definetly makes ya stronger. I was just wondering if any of the other members have avascular necrosis,glad to hear from you all.

Hi nonnie. I got Avascular Necrosis from Prednisone for Crohn's, but mine was more typical, in my hip. When it first started, I had a cone biopsy which bought me a dozen or so years before it was bone against bone. In 2001 I had a total hip replacement and that's probably the healthiest part of my body right now. It works beautifully, with no pain at all. I just have to show a card at airports and other places that scan for metal. The surgery itself wasn't fun, and the rehab is vital, but I'm glad now that I did it. I've heard that knee replacements are better now than they used to be, though trickier than hips. I hope it doesn't come to that, but if it does, just remember that the therapy is really worth the effort. BTW, I was just diagnosed recently with diabetes; so I'm inclined to believe that it's from the steroids. There has been some evidence that autoimmune conditions can cause AVN, but I've not heard of a correlation with diabetes. I hope the grafts alleviate your pain.

Glad to hear from you Lois, yeah it seems like when it rains it pours. I have not yet had the total knee replacements,they were worried that because the knees were so bad that the bone would not hold the total knee replacements,so I guess it's kinda like a guessing game, but all and all it's fine. I'm with you though the physical therapy is a must,cause it's just hard for a person to inflict that kinda pain on yourself. Nice hearing from you. Thanks,
