I have been able to stop taking my Lantus insulin as well as my Avandia by modifying my food plan to nothing white but cauliflower. By taking the obvious starches out of my diet I've lost about
45 lbs and had better sugars, to the point that I had to stop the Lantus because of my numbers going too low. I still have diabetes and I still need metformin to help move the glucose into my cells but I'm doing much better than I was previously when I was eating carbs.
Since diabetes is a metabolic disease you should see better numbers with lower weight, less food and more exercise. The byetta and glumetza have been helping with this. It's possible that you may get to the point of no longer needing meds but you will still have diabetes. Right now you are using medications to help your body use carbohydrates properly. If you can get to a point where the exercise and food plan balance out your body's metabolic handling you might be able to do it. If so, hurray! If not, that's ok, too. Whatever it takes to defeat this disease's progress on your body's organs is what you must do.
And also, keep on checking your sugars even if you go off meds. You don't want this thing to come back and bite you on the bum when you arent' looking. Congratulations on your great weight loss. Hang in there buddy! You are an inspiration to us all!
