Does it matter where in the body you take the lantus shot? My blood sugar seems to be much higher if I don't take it in the stomach. When the bs jumps I get leg, toe and arm cramps and a foggy brain. Thanks for any help. I am still on three pills of prednisone a day, could this med cause this also?

Ceebee, I'm sorry no one has replied to your questions.  Sometimes on the weekend forum traffic is slow but I hope we can get some answers to your questions soon.

My mom takes lantus and humolog and alternates sites between stomach and thighs. She has never commented about a difference in readings according to her sites. It probably has more to do with the prednisone.

Hi,

I am on 94 units of lantus per day, I use the pen needle injector.  When I first started I tried injections in my legs and found them to burn and be much more painfull.  I now always give them in my stomach tword the sides.  Because the pen only goes to 80 units I have to inject twice a night. I put 47 units in the left side then 47 in the right and this is mostly painless now.  I never noticed a change in BS regardless of the location though.

p.s. I think it has to do with how close you get to muscle with the shot. I have almost no fat on my legs, but the little extra padding in the tummy gives a less painfull injection.

Where you take the shot does matter. If you are on your feet alot taking the shot in your legs the insulin enters the system faster. I always use my stomach. The one time I took it in my legs I crashed big time. When I am in the hospital I have the nurses use the back of my upper arms since I will be inactive in bed.
Your blood sugars are higher when you take it in the stomach. Thats sounds like it is because it isn't entering your system as fast, which lantus is made to be a slow & long acting insulin.
Yes prednisone will raise your blood sugar levels. For my it sends them into the 400 - 500 range. I have one doc I have to fight and argue with cause he is always trying to give me prednisone.

Hi pincushion:) I am on prednisone and hoping to get off soon. I have kept my sugar levels in the 80 to 140's with the very low carb diet. Will my sugar level drop when I finish the prednisone in a few days? I had my hubby give me the lantus in the back of the arm and my blood sugar went way up. I only use the stomach now. My diabetes id prednisone induced...does that mean my sugar level may return to normal once I am off the prednisone? but still be a diabetic and need to keep close check of the sugar level? Thanks:)
