Byetta shots for controlling blood sugar levels

Good evening all. I am in need of any information that anyone can give me. My husband has been taking Byetta shots (5mg 2x daily) and Metformin (1000mg 2x a day) for a few weeks now. He watches what he eats but his numbers don't seem to be getting better. They actually seem higher than without the meds. Can anyone give me some insight? Also the meds make him feel sick and tired all the time. Does it get better?

Hi and welcome. The byetta really doesn't kick in well until the dosage has been upped to the 10mcg. pen. The usual protocol is that the doc usually keeps a patient on the 5 pen for a month or two to let the body get acclimated to the medicine and then increases the dosage to 10. That is usually when most people begin to see results. I found though that I really couldn't do the 10 pen and did better with going to a very low carb diet. I understand that the side effects from the Byetta can take 6 to 8 weeks to subside. I didn't have side effects from the 5 but the 10 knocked me on my fanny which is why I quit taking it. There are some blogs and forums out there devoted to users of byetta that might be helpful to you. Good luck to you and your husband. Those side effects can be pretty yucky. (very scientific term there).

My husband and I are both using Byetta. We love it!  He takes the same dosage that your husband does, also the Metformin, but he also takes Glyburide as well. Since he started taking it, he's lost 22 lbs., and his sugar level, which had been running between 450 & 590, is now down to 152! 

It takes a few weeks for the Byetta to start to work, so don't quit using it, and be patient. You'll be astonished at the difference.
