Had to deliver my niece's wedding cake on Saturday, two hours across the state, two lane highway with farm implements puttering along behind big combines... (sigh!) Missed the wedding, got the cake set up but went to my hotel and changed for the reception. Yes, I was busy. Yes, I was traveling. So instead of planning ahead and having a "food stash" that was safe to eat I just carried on with the day. STUPID!
By the time I got to the reception at 5:00 I was starved. I'm so used to drinking diet soda that it never occurred to me to order a regular pop to get my sugar back up. By the time the hors d'oeuvres were put out I was ready to eat the paint off the wall. I tried to eat sensibly but everything was on toast or crackers or tied up with green onions. There were no nuts and only about
10 black olives on the relish tray... and the darned little flower girl got to them first and stuck them all on her fingers! So I just ate what I could without going bonkers... But I know that low sugar made me get out of line.
Add a small glass of champagne to the mix for the toast, well, long story short... I ate all my rice, had the stuffing in the chicken breast, even had a piece of cake with the icing! Bad, bad, bad.
I thought I was celebrating. NOT!
Next morning my metformin got those carbs rolling along in my system and I had the most horrendous case of diarrhea I've had in years! Had to stop three times on my way home and was nauseated all afternoon. Heavens to Betsy! I KNOW better! I just didn't plan ahead and lost control of the situation. I always carry a Zone bar or some other nutrition bar but because of changing purses I didn't have it with me. So....
Don't be stupid like Jeannie. Plan ahead. Pack a nice emergency food stash with nuts, a Balance bar and some hard candy and keep it in the car so you can think clearly. Learn from my mistake and I won't feel so dumb.
