On September 14, my 7 year old son was kiiled in a car accident. We were driving less than 20mph when a lady rear ended us going about 80mph. I asked her if I could use her cell phone and she denied me. Later once the ambulance arrived, they stated that the cause of the accident was that the driver that rear ended me had a diabetic seizure. My question is, once you have a diabetic seizure, are you able to get out of a car and walk around anjd talk to people? Thank you..I need some closure....Very Concerned

I am so very sorry for your loss. This must be a nightmare for you as well as the diabetic driver. The ambulance personnel were EMT's and not doctors so they really weren't in a position to diagnose the other driver, other than to take her blood sugar and report the number. If she was being affected by low blood sugar (which can lead to seizures) then she may very well act in a non-rational manner. The brain runs on pure glucose and if the supply of glucose is cut off the brain goes haywire.

People in this condition have been mistaken for being drunk by police, taken to a holding cell and died because it wasn't understood. This is a real condition and one of the very scary things about being diabetic. Because our bodies don't process glucose correctly and transport it to our cells like normals we have medications and food plans that help us cope. When I have to drive alone I have extra food with me and I check my blood sugar during the drive. The problem arises because the rational brain that would say, "Hey, you need to stop and eat." isn't working correctly because it's being affected by low blood sugar.

I wish I could do something to help you. I am sending prayers... for you and the driver who must live with this awful memory.
