Joy, you can get some measure of control over the blood sugar by following a newer way of eating (newer for you, I mean) and a little change in your way of living. Honest. Sometimes there's really little we can control in our health that we end up just medicating ourselves and learning how to deal with the health condition because that's the only way it can be treated, but at this point with your blood sugar, you do have a lot of control over it. First of all, you need motivation. That has to come from you. If you've been in a vicious cycle with this, then you can get out of it. Some of the motivation can be seeing better blood sugar numbers. Start a daily log in which you write down your fasting number in the morning with the time, then the time you eat breakfast and what you eat exactly, then what your blood sugar is 2 hours after breakfast. Do this for every meal for several days and also your blood sugar reading just before bed. Also, note what kind of exercise you are getting in and what time you've done it, eg. 2:00 pm - walked for 20 minutes, that kind of thing. Then, look at your blood sugar and see what kinds of foods are getting better blood sugar readings and when your blood sugar is too high. In this way, you will be able to see how you react to what food. Make it your challenge. You will not be hungry. Snacks can be nuts, cheese, a hard-boiled egg, a few spoons of tuna salad with mayo, a mini salad with tuna with olive oil dressing. Try to stay away from processed food - anything coming from a box. Processed food has more salt and sugar and flour. The sugar and flour will raise the blood sugar. It's also more expensive.
I think all of us here have whined at some time or another and felt miserable and 'why me', blah blah blah, but that is unproductive because at the end of the day nothing has changed and you're only more miserable. If you think proactively and know you can improve your blood sugar yourself by making smarter food choices, it will give you even more motivation. Ok, now, report back here with a new attitude, ok? (PS And you can even change your name. Instead of 'couchtater', how about something more positive?)
