Cortisone Injection

I am a type 1 diabetic who has tendonitis in my thumb and the area below on my hand. The orthopedic doctor wants to ge me a cortisone injection but said that my blood sugars will go up. He can't tell me how high they will go or how long they will stay high. Since I take 4 injections a day (humalog & levemir) I don't know if I should do it. I don't know which insulin will need to be adjusted. My two doctors are telling me different things and I am totally confused.

Has anyone had a cortisone injection, and if so, what happened to your blood sugars?

Tweety, I can't answer your specific questions because I don't take insulin. I do know that cortisone will raise the blood sugar. If it's just one shot, it will have a lingering effect for almost a week as it diminishes - I think but I'm not sure. The other factor is the shot might not be as much as you'd get in a hip or shoulder, so maybe the cortisone dosage is less. I'm just guessing. Maybe you will need to test more frequently to know how to adjust it? I hope someone else can jump in here and answer your question. Good luck.
