Hi Joy. Wake up calls come in different forms and at different times. The worst reaction a person can have is denial, something that I had in the beginning for several months. You know a lot more than you probably did last week even and even though some part of you is still grumbling, you realize the bottom line: controlled blood sugar. There are so many complications that can arise from uncontrolled blood sugar over a period of time - and that differs with the person - but since you are aware of this now, you have the ability to control it better. Sure, I may miss bread, regular sandwiches, whole pieces of birthday cake, etc. but as I look at it, what's more important to me? You realize now that those fasting numbers from 140 to 175 can cause damage to various organs over time. The better you control what you eat, the better you'll control the blood sugar. I know that you have OA in your back but you might be able to start working with dumb bells if you ask your doctor if it's ok. You don't even have to buy them. You can do arm curls with soup cans at first. You have done really well so far, so keep on with it!
