I did not have gestational diabetes with my two pregnancies. I guess I'm suprised since it runs on my mother's side of the family but, well, here I am now! What about
you?

Hi Lanie! This is interesting and I have heard of this. I had high blood pressure with both of my pregnacies. My OB said that pregnacy puts a certain amount of stress on the body, that can manifest in things like high blood pressure and blood sugar. She explained that it is 'a window to the future' as far as what your body may do later. (word for word exactly what the article said!)
Now with that said, I actually have really low b.p. (except during anxiety episodes & pregnancy lol!) I am of course going to keep an eye on this, but so far so good. My sister on the other hand, had no trouble with b.p. during her pregnancy, but is now on medication to control hers. She is also a vegetarian, and a yoga instructor...go figure!
It just goes to show that our health is unpredictable, sometimes fragile, and always precious. We need to do what we can to take care of ourselves, and be prepared for anything!
Thanks for the interesting read and take care,
S.C.

I've not been pregnant. I did have a co-worker, though, who had type II and a strong family history. When she decided to try to get pregnant, her doctor put her on insulin from the start. Said she would be more likely to conceive, and would have less chance of problems with her pregnancy.

Several of my co-workers/friend have had gestational diabetes toward the end of their pregnancies. Just one of those things.

I had to take the GTT during my pregnancies but I thought all expectant mothers had to at the time. Later I figured it was because diabetes runs on my mother's side. Either way, there is great concern about
diabetes nowadays. Pregnancy certainly has our hormones up and down and with carring more weight, it could be a tipping point for those women who have trouble with carb metabolism. Better to know earlier than later of course. Better to prevent first if you can, too. As I told my family doctor who prescribed my blood sugar meter about
four years ago, I wish she had done this years before - Well, that was after having to go through denial and anger about
it. When I finally saw the light, I realized my health (at least
this
part) could be under my control.
