depression and hypos

having massive hypos. massive. and i am very depressed

and very mentally unstable, does your mental health play

a role on blood sugar levels? currently living with the very

nasty rapid cycling bi-polar disorder, among others.

Great A1c, Jamiee!  But I hope you don't keep having those hypos.  They may have brought down the A1c but that's not a good way to do it!  I'm glad your eating plan is good.  Keep it up. 

I'm type 1. My doctor suspected hypos when my hba1c reached 7.6, and she was correct, I was having a few, but also a few highs. The goal for hba1c for type 1 here is 7-8, so I very much nailed the target, but still she suggested I should lower insulin doseage. When I had hba1c levels over 9 few years ago, she sent me to a psychologist for a few sessions, but I don't know what brought that up. In any case, that didn't do much to me. I eventually brought down the blood sugar levels with or without the visits.

I've experienced a few insulin shocks too, but it only happened if I went to sleep with low sugar levels or overslept after taking insulin in the morning. So, I'll never do those things again, and have never experienced another shock. Shocks are no fun, you may not be able to recover on your own even if your liver was supposed to pump extra glucose into the blood stream before that happens. I've had that happen too, but the difference was that I was wide awake.. actually queing 1.5 hours to some lab test. I measured 3.9 mmol/l in the morning myself already, and after 2h without eating the lab test came back as 5.9. Naturally I ate too much immediately after they drew the blood still thinking I was low. Little did I know my liver must have already sprung into action, so I reached the other extreme. I don't ever feel especially hungry when I reach the lows, but I've learned to look for effects like certain anomalies in vision or finally the sudden sweat. That's technically a hypo already though, so I've reached too low without first feeling hungry.

Back to the point. I guess, the point is that people react differently and conditions are different. Some eat more if they are feeling down or depressed, some lose their appetite. I might probably do either depending on the situation. I don't feel happy, but I don't think I'm depressed either. My blood glucose in general is reaching both extremes, high and low at times. I haven't actually thought about depression itself having an effect on blood glucose, but seeing how blood glucose can vary wildly for no apparent reason, I wouldn't be too surprised if it was the case, be it direct cause or the result...

Btw, what's wrong with caffeine. I've been consuming quite a lot of coffee at work. You know, they say that software developers turn caffeine into code for a living.. what would I do if I dropped caffeine from my menu completely, eh.

Ok. Caffeine caught my curiosity because of one research questionnaire. They asked me how many cups of coffee do I drink each day on average and I don't know was it just a control question or is there something behind this - Should I limit my coffee intake..
