Hi Heather. Welcome to the forum, at least over on this side! First of all, the endo is absolutely the specialist you need to see, so I hope that eases your mind a little. The very basic difference between 1 and 2 is that type 1s don't produce insulin (or very little). They have to have insulin therapy. Type 2s still produce insulin but how much their pancreas puts out may vary and, they also vary in their ability to 'use' the insulin efficiently (They are insulin resistant.) which is why there are so many different kinds of meds to deal with that aspect. Sometimes, adults are diagnosed as type 1, also called LADA or 1.5.
Most likely the doctor will order lab tests to determine whether your pancreas still produces insulin or not which should identify your type.
As far as your treatments for the other illnesses, especially Crohn's, it's well-known that the diet or meds can raise your blood sugar and that has to be addressed by your doctor, probably with diabetes medication.
I've read stories of others who went through severe hypoglycemic episodes for some years only to be diagnosed as diabetic later in life. It's like the pancreas goes wacky, producing insulin or not or erratically.
So, I hope the endo can get a correct diagnoses. Keep us updated.
