Glucose meter-unreliable results

I bought a glucose meter at Walmart. I think its their brand-ReliOn. However its totally unreliable. I've taken mine and my husbands and it has come up with huge differences done at the same time. This morning, my first draw was 112. That was really high for me. I tried it again and it said 86. The same thing happened to my husband-a huge fluctuation, one reading done right after the other and it was totally different.

Is this normal or did I get too cheap of a meter?

Can anyone recommend a better meter?

It's normal to have some differences.  In the "industry", meters are allowed up to a 10% (maybe more) difference in their results.  I'd read that the WalMart brand came out pretty well on tests.  I'll bump up the post from Cosumers Reports on meters so you can read the latest tests.

The meters are allowed to be off 20%, most are within 10% most of the time.

ReliOn is a good brand, generic for AccuCheck I think.   And they are allowed to have a 20% swing range.

One thought I had did you wash your hands before sticking?  Could it be there was some left over food residue on your hands?

I have one of the Walmart Relion meters (cheapest strips I could find) and find it ok. Don't need anything fancy. Walmart's great for deals as long as you can live with yourself for shopping an an evil store that exploits all its grunts and suppliers.
