Has anyone heard of or tried the (Coca Cola) product: Gluceau Vitamin Water Zero? If so, have you treid it and what is your opinion?

It is supposed have:

Ingredients

Reverse Osmosis Water, Less than 1% of: Rebiana (Stevia Extract) and Crystalline Fructose and Erythritol (Natural Sweeteners), Calcium Lactate and Potassium Phosphate and Magnesium Lactate (Electrolyte Sources), Citric Acid, Natural Flavors, Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), Gum Acacia, Beta-Carotene, Sorbitol, Modified Food Starch, Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide), Vitamin E (Alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate), Vitamin B5 (Calcium Pantothenate), Glycerol Ester of Rosin, Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine Hydrochloride), Vitamin B12.

No I haven't tried it, I really don't care for stuff like that. Reading your ingredient list I see it has erithitol? and that may have a laxative effect.

I think it sounds like a good drink especially in this hot weather we're having. I don't think the erythritol is enough in one bottle to bother the stomach but I wouldn't drink more than one at a time. I've bought this when it's on sale and I like some of the flavors.

I just saw Feee 2 0 in Duane Reade and wonder if anyone tried that drink?

It's supposed to be free of 'everything," but it also does contain erythrtol and wonder why that would have laxative effect?

I made a mistake in my previous post. It's not the erythritol that can cause that effect; it's the sorbitol. However, you say that this drink Free 2.0 only has erythritol and stevia, so it shouldn't bother your stomach. Sorbitol and other sugar alcohols can cause gas and loose bowels if you take too much.

I just re-read this, yes the sorbitol can do it too. Any sweetener ending in ol may have a laxative effect, especially mannitol. Usually used in SF candy, and the warning is right on the label.

Have you ever tried the Free02? If not, would you try it knowing what was in, or not in it? I see it has Stevia. I am not familiar with the other ingredients.

I haven't tried it but the ingredients look fine to me. Electrolytes are especially important when you sweat a lot or even if you are sick with diarrhea and vomiting. Depending on the cost, it would be a good drink in my opinion.

I have trouble adjusting to these labels since I'm used to reading ingredients by 100 grams.

Anyways, the product in the first post appears to have 4g of carbohydrates per serving. 1 serving is 8 fl oz (2.37dl). I can only assume this stuff weighs about the same as water, so it's 4 grams per 237 grams. I guess that's not too bad as juice would contain about 24g per serving this size, and milk is half of that. The whole bottle contains just 10grams of carbs.

I don't think that little sorbitol would have laxative effects but it's personal. I've eaten lots xylitol, sorbitol, mannitol over the years before and after getting diagnosed with type 1 and only rarely they've had a notable effect. Then again I'm assuming that fructose is the main sweetener in that stuff.

Thanks Lanie. I just happened to find the Free20 in the Duane Reade near my home. It cost $1.58, if I am not mistaken. There are about four or five different flavors. Each one has just a slight taste of either grape, orange, punch, etc. No heavy after taste, etc., left in the mouth.

Well, I thought I was "set" with Free2O, but now they are out-of-stock. Don't know when, or if, they will be stocking it again.

I now I am on my quest again for a suitable water substitute drink, besides regular sodas. I happned to see "Fruit Refresers" by Cott beverages. It has "Sweetened with Splenda" on the label. The contents are:

Total Fat = 0

Sodium = 0

Total Carbs = 0

Sugars = 0

Protein = 0

Ingredients:  Filtered Water; Malic Aicd, Natural Flavor, Sodium Hexametaphospphate, Potassium Benzoate and Potassium sorbate (preservatives), Potassium citrate, Sucralose, Acesulfame potassium, Valcium disodium EDTA (to protect flavors) Red 40.

All on these ingredients, on all the bottles, is really quite confusing. Why so many? That's why I think I might have to settle for just plain old H2O and be finished with never-ending search for an acceptable water substitute drink.

#1- Have you tried it and if not, would you drink it?

#2- One of the indgreadients does make me question the use of this "Fruit Refresher" and that is the Potassium Benzoate. I have read some "bad" things about it, namely (as I might have posted elsewhere):

"Potassium benzoate is a food preservative that’s used to prevent the growth of yeast, mold, and bacteria. It’s drawn a lot of negative attention due to it’s potential to form benzene when combined with vitamin C. Long term exposure to benzene has been found to cause cancer, anemia, suppressed immunity, irregular menstruation, and infertility."

But, then again, I believe you mentioned you do not pay attention to these "warnings."

(ne doesn't know what to believe anymore. I think it is mainly one company "fighting" another company and trying to say their product is bad and our product is good. Where is the government in all of this? You would think the FDA would get involved and settle it (the claims, etc.) once and for all.)

#3- BTW Lanie, do you drink any juices? If so, which one and how much? I heard that oragne juice is not too "good" to drink and other juices as well.

Hi Bob,

In answer to your questions:

#1.  Never heard of it and probably wouldn't drink it because of all the artificial ingredients.

#2.  I think this product has too many artificial ingredients.

As I've said before I do put Splenda and Equal in coffee in the morning but only a packet each, so I don't worry about these products.  I've bought the Lite Fusion drinks by V-8 but not all the time.  When I do have them in the house, I'll drink one glass a day.

I think if you do buy any of these drinks, that limiting how much you drink is important.  As I've said before, some people guzzle these drinks all day long and that means they end up drinking a lot of these ingredients which I don't think is a good idea.

A better solution if you want a flavored drink is to drink water with lemon or lime juice.  Fresh lemon or fresh lime is best of course.  Or, squirt some from a bottle into your water.

Or, just drink plain water.

Sorry for all the questions about all these 'new' (diet and other) drinks.

So hard to find a good drink that is free from so many ingredients. I guess the bottom line is that these companies want to make money and they sell all these diet drinks, health drinks, etc., with so much advertising about the health benefits of the drink, when the drinks are not that healthy at all.

Will have to go back to drinking just water at each meal, and my cup of Sanka in the evening (with Splenda and Westoy Organic unsweetened vanilla soymilk).

I would say that plain water is probably the best drink.  I do squeeze part of a lemon into a glass of water when I have fresh lemons and if I don't, I use bottled lemon or lime juice.

There are ingredients in almost all products to inhibit bacterial growth,  shampoos, liquid soaps, drinks and probably other food, etc.  If they sit around long enough, food, drink and personal care products will develop bacteria, so it's not surprising to find potassium benzoate or other chemicals in these things.  If a person believes ingesting these additives will harm him, then he shouldn't drink it.  I do feel that if a person doesn't overload on the food and drink containing these things, then his health would not be affected, at least in the short term.  There are a lot of variables and unknowns though: an individual person's reaction, long-term use and over use.  And because we really don't know how our health will be affected by all these ingredients over time, I believe in moderation.  I've said all this before, too.

So, stay with water or water with lemon.  It's a lot cheaper, too!

Just FYI - someone gave me this URL of the FDA (in case you don't have it already) .

You can type in the item you are searching for (upper right hand corner) and the FDA will give you a list of their "findings" on that product (chemical, additive, etc.).

Such as aspartame, Potassium Benzoate, etc.
