That's too bad you have to delay your trip but now you can look forward to September. It's just a month away! I don't know about
Januvia but maybe some members here are on it or have used it.
Now that your husband is diagnosed, it may be easier to make your shopping lists and figure out meals. It would be a great idea for him to come on the forum to read some posts and ask questions! Tell him we won't bite! I know I've gone over all this a million times before but I'm going to list all the ways that you both can help your blood sugar be at more normal levels:
1. Test. Test your blood sugar when you get up, before you start eating and 2 hours after you finish the meal. This will tell you how your body reacts to the food you're eating. Keep a daily log with all this information so you can refer back to past days. Soon, you'll know what works for you.
2. Understand that diabetics do not metabolize carbohydrates the way a nondiabetic does. It's just the way our body works against us. If you eat potatoes, bread, cereal, rice, crackers (anything with flour and of course sugar), your blood sugar will go very high. Therefore, cut them way down and eat more vegetables, salads, beans, along with a piece of protein like beef, chicken or fish. Snacks can be nuts, string cheese, non-sugar yogurt.
3. You are right on target doing the exercise in the pool. You can also buy some dumb bells and lift them to build up muscle. All this helps use up glucose running around in your system. If you watch TV, get up during the commercials and march in place, lift the dumb bells or other activity.
You are the one in control of what goes in your mouth and by doing all the above, it's possible to bring your blood sugar down and even cut down on meds but you have to stick with it.
Tomorrow is a new day and I hope you and your husband will see some good coming out of some of the changes in your life.
