Rating Blood Glucose Meters for 2012

This month's Consumer's Reports magazine has the latest ratings for blood glucose meters. The rankings are slightly different than last time. Consumer Reports rates them by accuracy and consistency.

Measuring my fasting blood sugar used to drive me crazy before I understood that some meters are not very accurate or consistent. Sometimes I would have two separate readings, 30 seconds apart from the same pin prick, with readings that varied by over 20 points. With an accurate meter I no longer have that problem.

I was surprised to see this in November's issue (yes, the November issue just came at the end of September!) when they published their last list at the end of 2011. Of course, since this technology is constantly changing, it may not be surprising that there's already another list. There are some differences and I'll list the new recommendation in a new post.
