Well it is diabetes...

You know, as a diabetic we learn so much on what and how much to eat, test sugars, take meds. However, it never covers the topic I have tonight. I honestly don't know where to turn to, so I chose to come here to my online family that I have known for years online.
So I am asking all pet owners for a hand of advise.

My maltese, boy, was just diagnosed with diabetes. Shouldn't be a hard, as I am a diabetic. It is harder than I thought, as dogs are not humans! I understand I have to watch what he's fed, how much he is fed but that is only a portion of it.
How do I check his bloodsugar? What is his range? How much of his dry dog food do I give him? How do I safely inject his insulin?
Many families usually put down an animal when they develop diabetes, however, that is NOT an option for us. Just because of diabetes does not mean we can't have a good life span. It would be like putting ourselves down, and I won't do that. I learned to live with my diabetes and what to do and not to do. How does one go about to square one for a dog?

I don't know why you say most families put down an animal if they have diabetes.  I don't believe that is true.  When the vet thought our cat might have diabetes, he tested her blood sugar with a meter similar to mine.  I was concerned though that he tested on her ear because I didn't think I would be comfortable doing that.  Fortunately she isn't diabetic.  In any case, why didn't the vet give you the information you need?  I'm glad Judy posted the website but if I were you, I'd change vets.  Good luck.
