should I plan pregnancy with diabetes

I am 31 F, overweight. I was diagnosed with diabetes in Jan, 2012 (fasting 111, non fasting with glucose 234). My HbA1C test was 6.3 (May, 2012) and 6.1 (Oct, 2012). My fasting is 88 and random 165(latest). My dose of Glyciphage SR500 is now three times a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner since last 2 weeks. We wish to plan a family. Do you think I should go ahead with pregnancy with these sugar levels. I am on a healthy diet and trying to be active, but there has been no considerable weight loss in the last few months. We are concerned about the safety issue. Pls guide. We don’t mind waiting longer for the levels to improve or have other recourse like adoption.

Smith, I have no idea.  I wish I could help you but you need to speak to your doctor.  Do you have an endocrinologist or a regular doctor?  And talk to your gynecologist.  There are many diabetics who have had successful pregnancies but I'm sure there are possibilities of complications for both mother and child.  Of course, you would want to make sure your blood sugar is controlled in any case.

You can plan for pregnancy but make sure that before pregnancy make healthy life style choices and control blood sugar level!! You have to take more care than the normal pregnant women!!

I can't tell you what decision you should make, only you can decide this. If you do become pregnant, either now or later if/when blood glucose stabilizes, yours will be considered a "high risk" pregnancy. Please don't let those words scare you too much, the vast majority of high risk pregnancies go perfectly fine; it just means you will require extra monitoring from an OB who is experienced with special pregnancies.

You can expect to be put on insulin during a pregnancy; some doctors will start insulin when you tell them you are trying to get pregnant, while others will monitor blood sugar and start when they feel it is needed. Your diet will need to be especially strict, and you will likely have more frequent OB visits to monitor your progress.

I'd suggest making an appointment with a good high-risk obstetrician to discuss this (as well as talking with your endocrinologist or PCP). This can inform you of the real level of risk, the possible outcomes of any decision, and start you on a good path to get ready for pregnancy.

i was not a diabetic when i got pregnant but had gestational diabetes so i dont know alot but you will be considered high risk. i had to keep my sugars at 120 or below according to my doctor while i was pregnant and i went once a month for awhile, then twice a month and then once a week. had to have the baby moving monitor on me to make sure the baby was fine. she was but once i had to go to er cause she wasnt moving and turns out she was asleep and nothing they did would wake her. also when she was born her sugar dropped really low, at first she wasnt breathing and her heart wasnt beating. it was scary. i cant tell you what to do but i would talk to your doctor about how to get your sugars under control before pregnancy. i am 34 and will not get pregnant again. one cause hubby doesnt want any more and two i am not putting my body under the stress of pregnancy and being a diabetic. but if i was a diabetic nine years ago before having my first i would have gotten pregnant but made sure my sugars was under control. if you get pregnant and your sugars are not under control you will be put on insulin. i say talk to  your doctor and read up on the complications of pregnancy before making a decision.
