Hello folks,
My mom finally got a diagnosis of diabetes. She lives in India. She is not really keen on getting regular blood tests. I would like to get her a meter and few lancets/strips that go along with it.
Last month, Consumer Reports came up with the list of meters but the ratings is not much worse to make a easy pick. Walmart and Target brands are relatively cheap.
I wonder if there is any way to get Accu Check Aviva meter and strips little cheaper, because I am buying strips in bulk, like 100 or 200. (I don't really know how many I should buy for a 2 year stock, any suggestions?)
or
I should just stop by Target / Walmart and get their meter and strips. I also have Costco membership if there is any way to get cheaper there.
Update: Do you need A1C meter as well along with glucose meter or both of them are combined in one?
Thanks in advance.

A lot of meter manufacturers will send you a free meter when you fill out their short questionnaire online. The problem is the starter kits only come with 10 strips. You'll need a prescript
ion to get more test strips.

Lanie here in Ontario you don't need a prescript
ion for test strips

Ah! I'm wrong then. What I was thinking was using insurance to get them for less money than over the counter. You can buy them without a prescript
ion, just like the meters, but with insurance they're less expensive. Thanks, Will.

No Lanie, you are right but not everybody here has insurance, I just get a written receipt for my strips that way I am not charged the pharmacy fee

I get my strips and meters for free, but the downside is that the city decides which meter and which strips... and they keep changing the list of "supported" meters after they make deals with manufacturers or something.
hba1c meter is not necessary in my opinion. I don't even know how much that would cost. Here they only have lab tests for that.

Wal Mart has a meter and test strips that are fairly cheap. It is called the Relion brand. Meter is around $10 and the test strips run around $10 per 50 (I think.) If you are purchasing them out of pocket then it is probably the least expensive way to go.
I have not seen any Consumer Reports in a few years about
this brand but the last time I did it scored fairly well. Also any meter is better than no meter.

I cannot buy test strips with health insurance because technically I am not diabetic. But from daily testing for the past couple of years there is no doubt in my mind that I would be diabetic if I continued to drink soda and crap.
The cheapest place to buy test strips is thru the internet, amazon.com. about
half the price of what is in the drug stores.
