Welcome, jliggett, I'm sorry for everything you're going through. Diagnosing diabetes is done with blood tests. Treating it is a combination of diet, exercise and medication although it's possible to just control diabetes (type 2) with just diet and exercise sometimes.
Is it possible that any medication you've been on could be causing high blood sugar? Does anyone in your family have diabetes? Are you overweight? Any or all of these factors contribute to being diagnosed as diabetic.
In any case, please read the stickies at the top of the Diabetes forum for information about food, etc. In short, the more carbs you eat, the higher your blood sugar will be.
If you are prescribed a blood sugar meter, you will probably be told to test yourself the first thing in the morning (fasting) and about two hours after you eat a meal.
Keep up updated after your appointment so we can help you out more. Good luck.
