Hi everyone!
My husband is a type 1 diabetic-He takes insulin twice a day(once in morning, once before dinner), and has to eat enough throughout the day to maintain a good blood sugar. He rarely gets high blood sugar, his number is usually around 100, but we have been experiencing a few problems lately with him getting "low". (You will have to excuse my lack of certain knowledge about
diabetes because I am still learning as we go.I could tell you anything you want to know about
Crohn's though!)
He is a pretty good eater, although in the mornings, he tends to go for high sugary breakfasts. Example:coffee with cream, and an apple fritter from dunkin doughnuts
this drives me insane! what usually happens, his blood sugar goes up, then down, then he eats a big lunch, then adjusts his insulin so that he can eat dinner, then he eats dinner(I make sure it is a good balance of carbs and protein), and then around 8:00, his blood sugar goes way down, tonight it went down to 42. He usually eats a snack around this time, but his blood sugar has been dipping down faster than normal. He would usually eat a bowl of cereal around 9:00 pm to maintain through the night.
My theory is, if he eats more balanced meals throughout the day, that contain more protein(instead of a fritter, why not something with eggs, meat, or even a bagel with cream cheese or peanut butter), and then a normal lunch, his blood sugar will be more stabalized and less likely to dip down at night, after dinner.
This is causing me so much stress because sometimes he gets low, and I have to hold the cup of juice to his mouth because his hands are trembling so bad. This isn't something that happens all the time, just more frequently lately. We have been under a lot of stress, and I am sure that has something to do with him not always remembering to eat, checking his blood sugar or making bad food choices. He maintains a healthy weight, but I am just so scared that having low blood too frequently will start to have a negative effect on his body.
sorry for the long post-I just really need some help on this one!
