High blood sugar post colon resection

I am 3 weeks out of colon resection. My diet is supposed to be low fiber
and lots of white rice pasta white bread mashed potato to allow my
colon to heal. Only pain killer I'm taking is tylenol. My blood sugar has been fair in the am but this moening it was
184 and it's gone as high as 340 after dinner..it's down to 293 but this scares me. I take 1000 Metformin am and pm. Any ideas? I plan to call me endocrinologist Monday morning. Should I call her on a Sunday to get this under control. Thanks for any insight!

Welcome Jujubee1. I hope you're healing from the surgery. As you would guess, the special diet you're on is making the blood sugar extremely high because of the carbs.

I wish the doctor had changed your diabetes meds beforehand. The metformin would not be very effective on such a high carb diet, so since you can't change your diet, then, I would call your endo today.

Maybe there would be some baby food you could eat that's not so high in carbs but this is something your other doctor would need to suggest.

I'm 157 this am. Will check 1 hour after breakfast to see if it's holding or if Metformin takes it down a bit. If it heads up I'll call my endocrinologist. Thank you so much for replying Lanie!

I'm sure it's hard when you have two opposing factors right now! I only wish the doctor doing the resection had been more proactive about considering your diabetes. When you speak to him, see if there is other food you can eat - like the baby food. I'm not familiar with this specific diet, so I can't suggest anything.

And the endo should also have been aware of this surgery so he/she could have ordered different meds, perhaps. Well, what's done is done, so follow up on talking to these doctors and don't worry if it's a Sunday. You're their patient and that doesn't stop on the weekend!

Called dr. She prescribed 2.5 mg of glipizide (1/2 of 5 mg tablet) am with Metformin. If still high by evening take another 2.5. This will only go 4 weeks til I can start adding fiber.😅

Still running high. She upped the glipizide to 5mg am and pm along with Metformin. Not helping very much. Fasting blood sugars from 166 to 180. Will check back in on Monday.
In hospital the drs gave me insulin twice when blood sugar was high, if I were to take insulin to get this under control for the remainder of the month would that possibly throw me into full blown type 1 diabetes? She was thinking of giving me some type of med that causes you to spill your glucose into your urine. I have interstitial cystitis and don't think this would be a good med for me. Thoughts?

Hi, I'm sorry for the setback. The insulin is to help your own insulin bring down the blood sugar. That doesn't make you a type 1. Type 1 diabetics don't produce their own insulin at all and that's why they have to inject insulin.

I guess the medication they're considering is a steroid type? That would make your blood sugar go very high again. I think the doctors want to get you well but also don't want your blood sugar to damage your organs since it's been running high and that's why they would have you temporarily on insulin.

Ask these questions to the doctors when you see them. (Write the questions down and take the paper with you if you think you can't remember them at the time.)

I'm not familiar with glipizide. Maybe she should put you on another one or a combo. Metformin is good for those who are insulin resistant but by itself, it doesn't lower the blood sugar. Many patients do go on insulin temporarily while on steroids.

I wish you better blood sugar and I'm sorry for what you're going through.
