I have Diabetes as a result of pancreatic surgery and partial pancreas remaining. I thought I had Type II diabetes. In a Mayo Clinic Newsletter they described this Diabetes, and that is how I discovered I had a different type of Diabetes. My understanding is that this Diabetes can have symptoms like Type I or II, depending upon what parts of the pancreas were removed. I control my Diabetes with Metformin, diet and exercise. My A1C has been 6.0 or less. The Surgery occurred 9 years ago. My diabetes developed several years later. I wonder if anyone else on this forum has this type of Diabetes? I know that only 1-5 percent of Diabetes cases are in the "other" category. Not Type 1 or type 2. I have several other chronic conditions as well.

Hi Andie. There have been instances when doctors have to remove an entire pancreas for different reasons (tumor, cancer, injury, pancreatitis) and when that happens, the patient becomes a type 1 and will use insulin injections for the rest of his/her life.

I guess in your case, your partial pancreas is still producing insulin. Here is what I've found online:

I'm glad you're able to control the diabetes to good levels with metformin, diet and exercise! Fingers crossed that this continues.

Thank you for your input. Yes, pancreas is still producing insulin. I don't know exactly how much of my pancreas is left from the removal of a tumor, but it has been working at some level, but diabetes did develop in the following years.

It's good to have a forum to join. I am learning how to navigate this site, and am glad to have contact with you as Forum Moderator.

You can look through all the old posts for information as well as use the Search box above (It's under the tab that says Join HealingWell. If you want a general search throughout every forum in HealingWell, just type your subject. If you want to search specifically in the Diabetes Forum, then type your subject, Diabetes Forum, and that should limit to the search to just this forum. There might be some irregularities in Search but you get the idea.
